“Maybe not in Germany?” Scott offered, not sounding like he really believed it either.
“You could always just ask him,” Remy offered. Silence.
“Either way I know the Professor still loves him deeply,” Jean offered to the collective interest of the gossiping friend group. “And I think that Erik becomes Magneto in the future and that’s why the Professor was so desperate for us to get here before they arrested him. Because he wants him back.”

The drive from Austin, Texas to the west coast in California is far longer than Carlos ever expected.
He knew, on paper, on Google maps. He knew that it would take hours and hours and hours, with both sights and stops along the way, but somewhere around El Paso, not even out of the state, he began to wonder why he didn’t fly.
Because he wanted to take his car; that’s why. Because he’s giving up so much routine and familiarity to go on this trip that taking his car, the one thing that has given him more control over his own life since he was that sixteen-year-old who wanted to go traveling was his car, so he needed that. Needs that.
Still, by the time he drives into the underground parking lot of his new home for the next week, searching for the number eighteen for his spot just feels like the beginning of his journey.

Before he can think better of the action, Buck swipes to accept the call. He lifts his phone to his ear and, in a hoarse voice, says, "I'm not interested in buying my car an extended warranty. Actually, I'm not interested in buying anything unless it's a hefty life insurance policy I can enact within the next thirty seconds, so unless you've got that up your sleeve, go to hell, and stop taking advantage of poor idiots for their money."
For a long few seconds, the only response Buck receives is static. It crackles and hisses, but then there's a voice, weary, yet soft around the edges.
"Oh, wow," it says. "That is not what I was expecting at all."
Or: After having his leg crushed by a firetruck and his captain telling him he's unfit to work, Buck doesn't really see the point in anything anymore. That is, until his phone rings with an unknown number flashing across the screen, and a stranger by the name of Eddie Diaz makes him rethink everything.
