So, Rocky promised to do fewer late-at-night-while-Grace-is-asleep Wikipedia spirals, and I promised to write up some procedures for Rocky to follow in the event of various medical emergencies. I wasn't a medical doctor, but I was closer to it than Rocky, so I got to do a few Wikipedia spirals of my own, writing up a manual on how Rocky might plausibly remove my appendix or restart my heart if it stopped. I found the process strangely soothing, thinking about how Rocky would care for me if I needed him to, how Rocky always wanted to care for me. Putting my life in his hands was nothing new, really, but it was funny how often I ended up happy-crying while writing up a Rocky-friendly explanation of an endoscopy or a tracheostomy or a limb amputation. Because all I could think was how much I trusted him, how he made me feel so safe.
Rocky memorized every word that I wrote, and made his own notes as well. The How to Fix Grace binder, as I labelled it, grew thicker and thicker as we made plans to look after my soft human body.
So, after all that, of course it was Rocky who got sick.

“Need word,” Rocky says in baby-talk Eridian for me. The translator dutifully repeats “need word” in English a second later.
After fifteen minutes of bewildering back and forth between the three of us, we determine the word he needs is “declension.”
A year into the journey to Erid, Grace faces down his most formidable academic gauntlet since astrophage: the five-part polyphonic Eridian language. It’s only fair after Rocky mastered English, human mannerisms, Grace mannerisms- without so much as one complaint. And if learning Eridian might temper some of Grace’s desperate, near-complete dependence on Rocky in the future… well. That’s his own business.
Eridian breaks Grace’s brain, heart, and soul- and puts it back together.
