The NHL keeps a Central Registry of every team’s Emergency Backup Goaltender, or EBUG, an individual who must be prepared to play for either the home or visiting team should both goalies be taken out of commission. When the Registry was digitized in the mid 90’s a clerical error was made, and David Hollander has remained on file as Montreal’s EBUG. When Boston plays a preseason game in Montreal at the beginning of the 2017/2018 season, both of their goalies are taken out and David Hollander suddenly finds himself in the net in Boston black and yellow.

“Hey, I found him,” Tony says, finishing a conversation Ilya wasn’t in, easy like all conversations without Ilya are. Easy like the world isn’t ending. Like Ilya isn’t standing there, wishing every time he tried to self-destruct or kill himself had worked.
Greasy black hair. Sallow freckled skin. A turned head and horror-widened eyes taking in the big bad monster who finally arrived onscreen.
“Shane, Ilya; Ilya, Shane,” Tony says, totally oblivious. “You both like hockey, right? So that’s something in common. I’ve got to take lunch, but I’ll check in on you both before my shift is over.”
Nobody knows if Ilya Rozanov tried to kill himself before the draft. Nobody sane goes first overall. And nobody knows if Shane Hollander is going to survive another mediocre season with the Boston Raiders.

You fucking pussy!” Hollander shouts at Scott as his teammates hold him back, vicious as a tiny fluffy kitten. “Go home! You’re forty-five years old!” Rozanov’s words fall from his mouth as easily, Scott reckons, as Rozanov’s dick slides into it. He grimaces at that thought and does his best to give Hollander back as good as he gets but he's the fist to admit that his best isn’t all that hot these days. He’s just so very, very tired.
Tired, sad, fucking lonely. Sick of all this shit. And—though he hates to admit it, though it galls him to his core—he’s also jealous. Fiercely, viciously jealous. Jealous though he knows it’s illogical, knows that in truth all three of them are stuck together in the same suffocating closet, but jealous all the same. Jealous because Hollander and Rozanov have something that Scott will never, can never have.
They have each other.
For years he’s been waiting for whatever’s between them to run its course, burn out in the heat of its own flame. Instead it just seems to be getting stronger. They’re falling in love, or maybe they’re already there. Which is disastrous for them of course but still Scott can’t help but envy it. Whatever happens to them, they won’t be alone in shouldering the burden of it. It will always be shared, by another person who understands, fully and completely, what hockey is like and what life is like as a gay superstar of the sport. A person who won’t expect things from them that the other can’t give.
For that and that alone, Scott hates them just a little bit. Just enough that he’s able to kick the precious baby animal that is Shane Hollander right in his adorable face and feel only a tiny twinge of guilt about it. He’s sure Rozanov will be around before too long to help Hollander lick his wounds. And probably some other parts of him besides.
