Summary
The bell over the door rings, signalling someone’s entry. For a brief moment, the noise from outside rushes in: car engines, rainfall, the drone of pedestrian footsteps on pavement. When the door shuts, the ambient silence of the café returns. Chip puts his glasses on and glances up—
Just in time to meet Gillion’s shocked gaze.
Gillion, on the surface. Gillion, frozen at the doorway. Gillion, older and taller, wisps of green hair escaping from his braid to frame his face, blue eyes wide with shock, looking just as ruinous as the day he spat I’m meant for something greater and left.
“Chip?” he says softly.
Alternatively: When Gillion returned to the Undersea for good, Chip never expected to see him again.
