When Sylvia pulls the key on its chain from around her neck, unlocks the door and leads the Secretary inside, the room snaps into focus with the certainty of a dream. The shelves. The chair. The screen. Solid enough to mock her ever forgetting them. And, she notices, the green-gray tinge of the floor tiles, a colour only derived from pure white ceramic getting so filthy no amount of scrubbing could ever make them clean again.
She feels a little ill at the thought this time. Sometimes she initiates the process without a shudder of emotion, sometimes not. The times she fails at squashing her reflexive disgust at the blood, at the vomit, at the dirt beneath her shoes, those are the times that have cemented her decision to go through with reconditioning. Her country is worth all the dirt in the world and all the blood that has been shed to protect it, and if her body cannot fully believe that, it is her mind that will bear that belief twice over. Sylvia will carve that belief into her brain if that is what is necessary. Nothing else will do.

Knows all the marks that must be made on Jonathan Sims’s body, by all the things that crawl and choke and blind and fall and twist and leave and hide and weave and burn and hunt and rip and bleed and die, so that the world can be destroyed and gloriously remade in the all-knowing, all-seeing image of the Ceaseless Watcher. And for that, he needs something more than an Archivist, something more inhuman than Gertrude Robinson ever was. For that, he needs something that can Know and See and file away everything it lays its Eyes on, that can wait, and wait, and drink in all that is not its by right. For that, Elias needs… an Archive.

The streets only get busier when the holidays close in. Tourists, visiting families, traveling businessmen. But the crush of bodies swarming the streets of New York doesn’t make Theo feel anonymous or invisible. There are only more people around to observe him, waiting for a slip.
“Of course,” Boris says. His smile inches further up his face, knocked crooked across his cheeks. “Would be a waste not to. Is our first Christmas back together again.”
