Buck can hear raised voices. Chris looks stricken.
“She’s realised that I’m talking to you. Oh she’s really angry. Buck? Can you stick around. And put yourself on mute. I’m just gonna.”
Chris flips the camera so Buck can see the room instead of Chris’ face. Chris opens his bedroom door slightly and holds his phone to the gap. Eddie fills the screen. He’s in a black tank top, similar to the one he was wearing the day Buck met him. His hair is damp. His mouth is curled in irritation. He’s looking across the room, probably at Helena. It dawns on Buck that Eddie and Helena don’t know that Chris is watching, that he is watching.

Summary
“How can you be so okay with giving up like this? I don’t understand it, after everything that we’ve been through, how can you give up on this so easily?”
It’s a cruel thing to say, so wholly unfair to Buck, and Eddie is aware of that fact as the words slip into the open air. The guilt he feels at the words is tenfold when Buck finally whips his head to meet Eddie’s eyes—glimmering with hurt and anger.
“Easy?!” He raises his voice, startling Eddie back a step. The sponge and dish clatter as they splash back into the sink, “You think this has been easy on me? You’re so—” he shakes his head and Eddie has a front row to the show of emotions that play out over his face. “God, Eddie, you’re so selfish sometimes” Buck drops his eyes to the floor.

Buck, in true Buck fashion, starts planning for Eddie's move to Texas and it shakes Eddie so roughly that he finally starts thinking straight

Summary
Eddie’s terrified. The weight lodged in his chest has shifted to complete and utter panic. His skin is hot. His eyes are burning. There was once a time when he’d say, I do not panic, but even that was a lie. Eddie panics a lot, actually. But he’s been taught how to manage it, how to make himself Jello, how to bring himself back to reality.
But this reality is what’s panic-inducing, and he can’t Jello himself out of this one.
Because he’s not scared for himself. Eddie’s killed men before. More than four at a time. Eddie’s, objectively, been in worse situations than this. Eddie’s been shot and stabbed and buried.
But he’s never been in a situation like this, with a four-year-old who means the world to him, a four-year-old who’s Buck’s son.

Or - Eddie takes Theo to the mall. The trip does NOT go as planned, when robbers infiltrate and they’re forced into a hostage situation.

“Eddie?” Buck called from the kitchen, eyes glued to screen as the name disappeared and turned into a missed call notification.
“Did you find it?”
“Yeah,” Buck responded, just loud enough to be heard. He stalked out of the kitchen, phone clutched in his hand as it hung loosely at his side. “I found it.”

"Okay, so this was the only box I could find," he said, stepping up into the the rig and placing the box down on the gurney.
"Thanks, I'll get to those in a minute," Eddie replied.
"I'm already here, might as well help out. It's the right door, right?"
"Yeah, but just make sure—"
Eddie heard the clicking noise of the door shutting before he was able to finish his sentence.
...
Buck and Eddie get stuck in an ambulance together during a thunderstorm, and conversations ensue.

“I don’t need a sales pitch,” Eddie snarks, and the tendrils of thorny frustration curl up around his throat, pressing into the thin skin of his carotid artery. His pulse throbs.

“So maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea for Buck to drive to Eddie’s house on a day he knew Eddie didn’t have a shift, during a time he knew Chris was at school. But…he needed to see Eddie. Needed to know that Eddie didn’t hate him—he wouldn’t accept any other outcome. So he hyped himself up and strode towards Eddie’s door, breathing deep to quell the anxiety bubbling up inside him. Each step felt heavy, like he knew he was walking towards his doom.”

After the lawsuit is dropped, Buck tries to talk to Eddie about why he did what he did and to get Eddie to understand. Eddie gets mad, freaks out on Buck and yells. Buck flashes back to his childhood and shuts down, completely disassociating. Eddie fixes it.

At his questioning, Eddie sees something set alight in Buck’s eyes. Sees him square his shoulders like he’s prepping for a fight.
“Yes, Eddie. I bought it.”
Apropos of nothing else to do, Eddie squares his shoulders, too. Crosses his arms, matches his tone, nods slowly, and considers,
“Okay, Buck. You bought a house.”
If Buck wants to pretend this is normal, fine. Eddie will too.

Buck swallows and ducks his head, suddenly sheepish. Half a moment later, a warm, solid weight materializes on his shoulder. Eddie's palm radiates heat through the thick fabric of Buck's sweater. It's instantly grounding.
"You're allowed to cry, Buck," Eddie says quietly. "We've been through a lot today."
"It's not fair when we're arguing," Buck mumbles, refusing to look up.
Eddie sighs, his grip on Buck's shoulder tightens, his thumb pressing in against Buck's collarbone. "We're best friends. You never have to pretend with me."

“It’s too much,” Buck whispers, his body tensed like it’s ready to snap. “Losing Bobby. Losing you. Feels like… like everything is falling apart. I don’t… I can’t do it.”
“I get it,” Eddie says. He tightens his hold on Buck, thumb searching until it finds the pulse thrumming in his neck. Buck’s heart is still beating. He hasn’t lost him, not yet, and he can fix whatever’s broken between them—will fix it, no matter the cost. “But what does that have to do with Tommy?”
Buck’s jaw shifts, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. “It’s the only time the thoughts stop. When he… when he…” he stiffens, trying to pull away, but Eddie can’t have that. With his free hand, he snags a handful of Buck’s shirt.
“Say it,” Eddie whispers, jealousy and misery and desperation all curling together in his gut.
It doesn’t matter that he has no right to claim Buck as his. It doesn’t matter that following his impulses never leads to anything good. All that matters is that Buck is here with him right now, and Eddie isn’t going to let him go.In an alternate universe, Buck goes back to Tommy after losing Bobby. Eddie finds out and they fight while trying to process their grief.

Summary
When Eddie and Christopher return to Los Angeles, Buck hands over the keys to the house with a tight smile and a casual, “Place is yours again, man,” as if moving out hadn't quietly broken something inside him.
What Eddie doesn't know is that Buck never actually found a new place.
For months, Buck has been living out of his Jeep, keeping his belongings in a storage unit and pretending everything is fine. He still shows up to work, still jokes with the team, still makes time for Eddie and Christopher, but he refuses to let anyone see just how badly he's struggling.
Eventually, Eddie starts to notice the cracks.
And when the truth finally comes out, so does everything Buck has been carrying since the funeral, including the belief that Eddie's grief-stricken words in the kitchen afterwards were proof that he was simply too much for the people he loves.
But Eddie isn't going to let Buck believe that anymore.
Because Buck isn't a burden. He isn't a failure. And he certainly isn't sleeping in his Jeep another night.
He's home.
And this time, Eddie intends to make sure he knows it.

“And did you see that firefighter from the 136?” Buck exclaimed. “She was such a badass when she–”
The bead of sweat trailed down his spine.
“Buck?” Eddie interrupted his so far uninterrupted tangent.
Buck turned to him with a grin. “Yeah, baby?”
“I can’t wait to see what you have planned for our special day tomorrow.” Eddie winked at him.
Buck froze. His hands stopped moving, suspended mid-air. The color drained from his face.
“...tomorrow?” Buck asked.

Summary
Buck falls asleep on the living room couch, and Eddie decides to be nice and let him sleep, not wanting to disturb his peaceful slumber. He covers him with a blanket before heading to the bedroom and going to sleep himself, which would normally be perfectly fine.
However, at approximately 5am, Eddie is violently ripped from his peaceful slumber by the sight of a mysterious, blanket-wrapped figure standing at the foot of the bed asking, “Why did you leave me?”
Eddie nearly dies on the spot. It takes him several seconds, and turning on the light, to realize the terrifying apparition is, in fact, just Buck who is apparently very upset that Eddie abandoned him on the couch.
