Alhaitham replies calmly, uncrossing his legs and forcing his body to relax in an attempt to diffuse the tension surrounding them both. 'That, and you’d probably be more successful in your efforts to achieve those goals you can't stop talking about.'
'And those would be…?'
'Paying off your debt, I’d assume.' he replies steadily while feeling anything but. 'Leaving this place' he tacks on at the end with his voice barely above a whisper.
'So this is what it’s about…' Kaveh trails off, a sad exhale of a laugh slipping past his lips and all the fight leaving his body along with it. 'I guess I should’ve seen it coming.'
Kaveh often says things he doesn’t mean in the midst of his anger, and this time doesn’t seem that much different from the others. That is until he hears him mumbling under his nose, eyes downturned.
'...I guess I will.'

The coat remains across the room. Entirely ordinary.
And yet his attention keeps returning to it. To Wriothesley removing it without hesitation. To the brief brush of his hands near Neuvillette’s shoulders. To the warmth trapped inside the lining. To goodnight, Neuvillette, spoken with that impossible softness Wriothesley sometimes allows into his voice when no one else is near enough to hear it.
Neuvillette turns onto his side. He should return the coat tomorrow.
Of course he should. That is the sensible thing. The courteous thing.
His eyes drift once more toward the armchair. Tomorrow, he decides. And because Neuvillette has spent centuries believing himself to be a creature of remarkable self-discipline, he does not yet recognize this for what it is.
Or, Wriothesley offers warmth without asking for anything back, and Neuvillette does not know what to do with that.

Summary
"Do you know who I am?"
Sunlight caught the loose strands around his face. His eyes were a clear, startling red, and the worried line between his brows eased when Alhaitham looked at him. He was still stroking his hair. The answer seemed obvious.
"You're an angel," Alhaitham breathed.
"Oh, no. You're confused." Color rose in the man’s cheeks. "Nicole is the actual angel. I'm Kaveh."
Alhaitham looked toward Nicole. She and Kaveh both had golden hair, and she was watching him with the same patient interest. He could see the resemblance clearly.
"Sorry, miss," he said. "Your brother is very pretty. Can he stay with me a bit longer?"
or: Alhaitham temporarily loses his memories after reconstructing Aaru and mistakes Kaveh for an angel. Nicole enjoys teasing her new brother about it.

“Fool.” Valeriy breathes, a fond smile tugging at his lips even as Mitya squawks in indignation. “All I’ve ever wanted, since that first day, is you.”
