    Shane gasped and stumbled backwards. “Three weeks? You decided-” his hands flew to his mouth. “How could you do this without talking to me? This is what? To punish me because I won’t come out on your timeline?”

    Ilya felt a stab of anger. “You won’t come out on any timeline!”

    Shane blinked at him. “I literally drove here tonight because I wanted to know if you would accept six to twelve months!” 

    “A timeline,” he barked. “This is our lives, Shane. I want to be with you fully now. I know you are scared, but you need to be brave, and I am so deeply fucking unhappy being your dirty little secret.”

    “That’s not fair Ilya, it’s going to be complicated for me. I’m already the only Asian captain in the league! The media, sponsors, the Voyageurs? It’s going to need to be carefully managed-”

    After the Boxing Day fight, Ilya makes an impulsive decision and agrees to a trade to Vancouver, while Shane stays in Montreal and nurses his broken heart. But an ending isn't always an ending, and the spectre of their love burns far too brightly to go down easy. A tale of love, heartache, redemption, and forging the happiness you deserve for yourself.

    The adoption story is actually pretty well known around Boston.

    After he was drafted, Shane flew to Japan to visit his grandparents in Kyoto before reporting to the organization.

    On the trip back, he stopped in Paris and met a young woman who was trying to escape an abusive husband.

    He helped her get safely to Canada, connected her with organizations that support women fleeing domestic violence, and stayed in contact while she got back on her feet.

    When she gave birth by the end of his first year as a professional baseball player, she made the incredibly difficult decision to place the baby for adoption.

    Shane adopted her.

    Her name is Sofia Yuna Hollander.

    Shane knows he has a year to make things work on the Cens. That’s how long he signed with them on a bullshit try-out contract that’s way under his fair market value. And, yeah, he could’ve held out and haggled to get a better deal or waited to see if he’d get better offers - any offers - from other teams. But Shane hates uncertainty and signing with the Cens guarantees he’ll play hockey - with Ilya too.

    It just means he has a year to prove - to the Cens, to other teams, to the whole fucking world of hockey - that he’s still the best player in the league and a generational talent and worth a fat contract with term. Even if he’s half-Japanese and gay and married to Ilya.

    The first and most important step is Tanner Dillon.

    Shane positions the bottle in the middle and spins it. His heart feels like it's going to burst out of his chest as he watches the bottle spin, and spin, and spin. It finally starts to slow and then it stops. Shane looks up to see that the bottle landed on—

    Ilya Rozanov. Of course that's who it would land on for his first ever kiss, Shane thinks, stopping himself from rolling his eyes. He finds himself saying what hasn't been commented on yet tonight, "So do I spin again or—"

    Shane looks at Rozanov when he says, "Do you have problem with kissing a man?"
