    If they hadn’t been so immersed in the emotional moment, any of the Byers might have heard footsteps approaching from the corridor that led to the room. If Will hadn’t been so determined to confess to his family right then he might’ve thought about doing so in another room, maybe one with a functioning door.

    If his eyes weren’t blurry with tears he might’ve caught a glimpse of Mike approaching from his peripheral vision.

    But he didn’t see him, and no one heard him.

     

    Mike Wheeler was already stumbling into one of the chairs closest to the corridor when Will blurted out: “I’m gay.”
