The inn owner looks from the paper Zhongli Quan is holding, to Zhongli Quan, to the paper, then back to Zhongli Quan. “Are you joking?”
“Hey, I’m showing you a portrait and asking from the goodness of my heart if you’ve seen him. This is my friend and I only want to find him to pay back what I owe him, you can’t even take a closer look and guess – “
“I could look at that for three hours and still only tell you I couldn’t recognise him,” the inn owner interrupts, unimpressed.
Zhongli Quan looks at the portrait. If you know Lü Dongbin, it’s great! It’s got his hair, it’s nearly got his shoulders, it’s kind of got the angle of his nose – no, it’s really not the best. He’d described Lü Dongbin to a street artist and they’d given him – well actually, it’s probably about as good as the Wuxinchang sketches. This one has Lü Dongbin’s hair, at least.

Joo Won feels his back tense. So Dong Sik’s noticed his mood.
“I’m not pouting,” he protests anyway. He can’t be.
Dong Sik makes a sound similar to a chuckle. When done washing his hands, he wipes them carefully, methodically, with a towel, and only then turns around. His eyes are always intense, but he looks Joo Won’s face up and down, down to his lips.

“Am I? Look at him – attended one meeting and immediately pinpointed your failing. And took steps to correct it, to your benefit. You’d never even consider taking up something so ridiculous otherwise – but if Shen-laoshi gave it to you? You’d do exactly what you’re doing, treasuring it.”
Zhao Yunlan looks down at his work. It’s just a long, rectangular strip of stitches, more regular in size and tension near the needles than at the start. “I’m not treasuring anything. It’s just convenient.”

Zhongli Quan collapses back into his seat, staring at the scroll with the golden wish highlighted, glowing, projected into the air for all of them to read.

“All wishes must come true,” Li Tieguai says, puffing a cloud of smoke towards Zhongli Quan, doing a terrible job of hiding his smile.
“How is this kind of wish allowed?” Zhongli Quan whines. “What do we do about this? Can we ignore just this one?” He looks at Lü Dongbin, his eyes big, wet, and desperate.
Lü Dongbin is staring at the scroll, his eyebrows drawn heavily together. “Well – I’m sure they wouldn’t hold us to a wish like this, right?” He looks to Cao Guojiu.
“I don’t know. I’ve never seen a wish like this before, but – they say all wishes for a reason,” Cao Guojiu says.
