Summary
When Rebekah leaves with Hope to protect her from Klaus’ and their enemies in New Orleans it seems like her chance to finally get the life she's always wanted but never had, has fallen directly into her lap. Until her own enemies start coming after them. She needs a distraction to keep them away from Hope. Enter Caroline. Having found an abandoned baby to link Hope to, Rebekah leaves Hope with Caroline to raise while Rebekah takes the other girl to draw their enemies away. Caroline turns to Bonnie for help as she's going to need a witch to keep the young Mikaelson safe, and with no other witch contacts of her own, it's her only choice. But are they capable - let alone prepared - to do what they need to to protect the young girl during a life on the run from monsters far older than they?

As resident witch, Bonnie feels pressured by her friends to complete such a monumental task. However, she has bigger problems. Like the younger brother of the Mikaelson clan that she could almost swear she'd seen before.
She just wishes she was wrong about that.

Three shots ring out.
Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.
There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)
Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.
