Summary
Outside, bugs swarm around the porch light. A half-moon hangs over the dark swath of lake, spider-spun white daubed across the oil-spill surface. That perfect day on the water was less than a week ago. The scabs on Ilya’s ankle haven’t even healed. He knew the rest of their lives would be an uphill battle; he just hoped they could lie in the grass for a little longer.
There’s a hitch in Shane’s breath, a catch that brings Ilya’s attention back to him. He’s seen the ice tilt, analyzed the offense, and realization freezes across his face.
The whistle blows. Ilya’s been caught.
“You don’t want to figure this out,” Shane says finally. “You want him to billet with you.”
Last season, Ilya broke his jaw. Next season, he'll break from Boston for Ottawa and a shot at making an impossible relationship work. This season, he breaks every promise he’s ever made.

Summary
His outstretched glove hangs there, frozen, as the noise of the arena mutates into a ringing buzz. Then he’s moving, pushed away by Marlow, and then Boston’s goalie. There’s a flurry of movement, a trainer with a towel, more blood dripping onto the ice, and he just. Stands there. Staring.
Ilya is helped off the ice. Shane doesn’t even tap his stick.
Remember when Sidney Crosby caught a puck with his jaw? That doesn't happen to Shane. That happens to Ilya.

Summary
One second Ilya Rozanov is flying down the ice with the wind in his hair and the puck in his control, almost certainly on his way to score the tying goal, and the next, he’s crumpling to the ground. He falls, slides limply until his body cracks against the boards, and lies terribly, unnaturally still.
Getting your bell rung by another player is one thing; it happens. Falling limp and heavy to the ice when no one’s even touched you is another thing entirely.

Summary
They’d considered it—Shane being gay. It’d been an option. But Ilya Rozanov and the way Shane looks at him like he’s the love of his life has blindsided them. Blindsided both of them, and there’s almost nothing Yuna likes less than being blindsided.
She’s not mad, David wants to say. We’re so proud of you. We’re so happy for you. We just didn’t know.
Somehow we missed it, you falling in love.

“What did you actually think?”
He can’t help it. He looks at Ilya. Ilya only stares at him. “I say that now, in hindsight. Back then, I wasn’t thinking. Not really. It would come to me in waves, the anxiety, the fear. Most of the time,” he says. “I was just…”
“Waiting for me to speak?” Ilya offers.
Shane shakes his head, “I was trying to make it to tomorrow with you alive.”

The problem is, no one knows how to market Ilya Rozanov's (in his own words) sexy Euro masculinity to an audience of white straight men.
He needs the best. And if it happens to be his secret lover’s mother who despises his very existence, so be it.

Summary
Maybe together they could figure out a way to make sure Ilya was never afraid of David again. He really didn’t want to be afraid of David.
“Is… silly.” Ilya said. “Maybe not silly, but now that we are here and not there, I see it was silly. I broke the wine, and I thought - maybe everyone will be angry. And…” Clearing his throat, Ilya pushed past his discomfort to spit out the next part. “Well, angry back in Russia is not the same as angry here, I think.”
“What was angry like back in Russia?”
OR
Ilya drops a bottle of wine, and it's fine. Really, it's fine. If only someone could tell Ilya's brain that.

Luckily, the kindness of a stranger ensured he made it back to his parents safely, putting an end to a terrifying three hours for the Hollanders. Summary
“You broke up with her,” Ilya says, arms loosening against his chest.
“No, she, uh—” Shane ducks his head, avoiding Ilya’s eyes. “We slept together. And she kind of … she didn’t confront me, I guess. But she talked to me. Kind of hinted that she thought I might not be…”
“Into girls?” Ilya finishes for him.
“Something like that.”
“You denied it?”
“No, I— I told her. About me. About—us,” Shane’s head snaps up, a hand lifted in Ilya’s direction. “Not about us, us. That I’d been sleeping with someone. Another player. I didn’t tell her about you.”

Summary
Shane pulls back, carefully cradling Ilya’s face. “Maybe we shouldn’t.”
“You don’t want to?” Ilya’s eyes are bottomless; swimming with grief. He says it like he really means, You don’t want me?
“That isn’t what I mean,” Shane says gently, brushing his thumb over Ilya’s cheekbone. Ilya’s eyes flutter shut, as if being treated so tenderly causes him physical pain. Like he isn’t used to it. “You’re hurting. I don’t want you to regret it in the morning.”
Ilya’s eyes open. “I have never regretted a moment with you.”
