Summary
For a moment, it was as if time rewound. Hua Cheng was transported back eleven years to the scared little boy who desperately wanted his favourite teacher to stay. But any hope of seeing Xie Laoshi had died long ago. Xie Lian, Hua Cheng mentally corrected himself. He was not Hua Cheng's teacher anymore. Time had done so much to change Xie Lian. The once long, silky hair had been cut short, strands of silver woven through the once vibrant browns. There was a thicker streak of grey near the front, perfectly designed for running fingers through.
There were a few wrinkles adorning Xie Lian's face that hadn't been there when they last met. Crow's feet at the corners of his eyes. Laugh lines by his lips. Signs of a life filled with joy. And yet, the golden eyes looking back at him didn't seem to contain the happiness Hua Cheng had once known them for. Maybe it was just this situation that had brought him down, Hua Cheng reasoned. Xie Lian had every right to be dejected. Regardless, seeing Xie Lian over a decade later brought with it a startling realisation.
Hua Cheng was just as hopelessly in love with him.

Summary
“They say you have a secret… lover, General.”
Xie Lian expects anything except the low chuckle Hua Cheng lets out. He sees the way his shoulders relaxes completely, leaning back slightly against the wooden frame with indifference.
“Is that what they are saying?” Hua Cheng asks, his tone dripping with an amused, easygoing disdain. “The barracks must be more desperately bored than I realized.” He scoffs gently, “Your Highness should ignore them. It is nothing but the idle fantasies of men who have spent too many weeks staring at fortress walls.”
Xie Lian stands perfectly still on his side of the divider. Despite hearing the careless dismissal in Hua Cheng’s voice, his own heart refuses to slow down.
“So is it not true that you are breaking curfew for… someone else? Besides for… coming here, of course.”
Or, Crown Prince Xie Lian hears a rumor that his long-time friend, general and personal guard Hua Cheng is taken. He hates the sound of it. So much that he comes up with an ill-advised plan to test if the rumors are actually true. A truly faithful man would not fall for such schemes, right?
