Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Our country has thrived even in armed conflicts and economic crises. We’re a tight-knit bunch who know how to endure and adapt. That’s who we are as Americans. We set an example for the rest of the world on how we as a collective should face a problem head-on. Our resolve as patriots will be tested again with the increased hostilities between the general public and the mutants. They’ve proven to be exceptionally dangerous when left to their own devices. We all know how volatile they are and what they’re capable of on a global scale. Mutants are the danger. They are a threat, and we must keep an eye on their actions lest we suffer more casualties. When innocent civilians die on a mass scale, it shouldn’t be to some manic mutant terrorist or a raging hulk, no, only natural disasters should be capable of taking so many lives in a short period of time. And that is why I will authorize the Mutant Detainment Initiative as soon as possible. To any and all mutants on American soil, you’d best behave and be mindful of how you conduct yourselves in public and behind closed doors because there will be hell to pay.”

-

“It’s 2028! Summer’s are hot as hell and there’s hardly any decent winters anymore. And all these morons who denied that the climate is changing are now saying that it’s recorded in Revelations! How does that make sense?! Why do they always back up against a text full of fairytales when the truth is shoved right in their faces?”

-

“Ross’s administration has been claiming that mutants are the cause of everything wrong with mankind. I bet you that if mutants weren’t a thing, our world would still be a shitty world. Besides, it’s always the usual suspects who start all these fuckin’ conflicts and all these wars. Who fucked over the planet with two consecutive, back-to-back global conflicts within thirty years?”

-

“It’ll be too soon when cities will be built in forests and on mountains. We have the technology and the fucking opportunists who are more than willing to destroy the world in the name of progress. Humans as a race are at max capacity in terms of population. We’re literally devouring our own world to its core like one bigass apple and no one gives a shit enough to fight back.”

-

“I really don’t understand how a nigga like Tony Stark can supply the wars that have been decimating the Middle East and all he ever got was a slap on the fucking wrist. Oh, so because he flies around in colorful armor and fights demons and aliens he gets to escape accountability? There are still so many weapons out there which were manufactured by his company in the hands of crime syndicates, regimes, and anyone who’s another fucking evil bitch.”

-

“It’s like so many normal human beings who are extremely anti-mutant suddenly forget that a lot of history’s most vile, conniving villains are humans. But then again, they champion those awful men, so…”

-

Peter and Jean have been making out on the sofa in the former’s apartment for the better part of five minutes. He has returned from an assignment out of state. Peter’s right hand reaches beneath Jean to grope her rear while he grinds his bulge against her.

Jean breaks away from the kiss and gasps for air. She smiles widely at Peter, her upper teeth clinging to her bottom lip. Her expression causes Peter to smile. “What?” He asks.

“You’re so beautiful.” She kisses the corner of his lips. “And beautiful.” She kisses his nose. “And beautiful.” She slides her tongue back into his mouth. He reciprocates the intensity of the act.

“Is that all?” He asks through the kiss. “I have ears for a reason, Jean…Keep talking to me, baby.”

Jean whispers directly into his ear. “Wanna hear me moan instead?”

-

An hour later, Peter sits on the edge of the bed, reaching down to pull his left sock on. Nude behind him is Jean, who rubs his back with her right hand. “I hope you’re not leaving me behind for another road trip anytime soon, Pete.”

Peter turns his upper torso to properly kiss Jean’s sweaty forehead. “With all the crazy shit going on, why don’t you come with me?”

Jean shrugs, causing the sheet to fall down to expose her breasts, though Peter maintains eye contact. “You know I can’t. It’s all hands on deck back at the academy. In fact, I was expected back an hour ago.”

Peter gulps. Jean recognizes the concern. “We’re not gonna let a little distance break us apart, Peter.”

Peter feels a bit ashamed. “I’m sorry. It’s stupid of me to doubt us.”

Jean slowly pulls him back onto the bed. They are now nose to nose. “At least it’s for the right reasons.”

Peter scoffs. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I’m teasing you. You know, because I’m a mutant and you’re a normal…white guy.”

Peter adores how dorky she can be. “Like I said all those years ago. You have me. And I have you.” He raises his body over hers. “Want me to back up that claim again?”

Jean shudders when she feels his erection poking her. “Y-Yeah.”

-

The following day.

-

Peter and Jean laugh and quietly flirt at their favorite cafe in Manhattan when another peaceful demonstration begins outside. Hundreds of protesters, both human and mutant, chant and stomp down the streets.

Peter is wary, especially since he believes his sense will go off. Jean places her hand on his hand. He looks her in the eye. She shakes her head.

This is their way of retaliating.

Peter glances outside then back at Jean.

They don’t need a reason to arrest or hurt these people. Oregon was proof of that, Jean.

Jean frowns.

I know. But that doesn’t mean we should respond with violence anyway. Besides, we’re feared even if we’re collared or keep to ourselves on an island.

Peter deeply exhales. “Let’s join them.”

“Huh?”

He smiles.

-

Peter’s left hand and Jean’s right hand hold each other tightly as they march alongside the protesters, chanting and cheering.

Jean’s smile is broader than Peter’s smile. She goes from side-eying to full on staring at him. She is so proud of him, so in love with him.

I love you, Peter Parker.
