It's 7 years after the Upside Down closed, 7 years since The Party had to endure so much and still almost lost. Dustin is graduating from college, and Steve decides to take a trip. He needs to be in New York by the end of May, but Steve decides to leave Hawkins behind early and takes off when spring break starts. He needs this trip to clear his head and do some healing, alone in the silence of his RV. That's the plan, and his trip is going well until an unexpected flat tire leaves him stranded in San Francisco. Alone on a Friday night, Steve needs a drink, and as if the fates were listening, he finds a bar across the street from his motel. Enjoying a drink and a smoke, he hears a laugh like the ghost from his past. He knows it can't be Him-- knows there's no way in hell because he's 7 years gone and Steve isn't stupid enough to believe it could be him. But what if it is?

After the events of season 5 Mike wakes up to the realization that he's just being used by Vecna in the Upside Down. Giving him too much information on his own thoughts and feelings.
Back in Hawkins his family and friends are grappling with his disappearance while also trying to stop the Mind Flayer, Vecna and the military.
The painting is rolled back up and shoved into the closest bin when he spots it. He runs towards it, hands yanking it out and sending the bin to the ground with a clatter. Carefully he unrolls it and checks for any damage. The characters are in different locations on the canvas then he remembers. Instead of Mike the brave leading the party he is trapped in vines by the forest. The rest of the party is desperately searching for their leader, backs turned to the hydra that is quickly advancing on them. The painting drops from his hands and he runs them through his hair. This isn’t the painting he remembers. They are supposed to be united against the enemy.

Hopper growls in frustration, pressing the corner of the radio to the center of his forehead while he waits for the urge to throw it to pass.
A branch snaps behind him, and he whirls on the spot, hoping to see one of the kids -- hoping he doesn't see one of Akers's military buddies. What he sees instead... is neither.
What he sees is another kid, one he hasn't seen for years, looking a little like a deer in headlights, and a lot worse for wear. He can't recall the name right away, but the kid raises his hands towards his shoulders like he's surrendering.
The kid's hair is buzzed, and his face is dirty, and his clothes are ruined, and his expression bleeds uncertainty, and all of those things combined just remind Hopper of El.
