The beat was built from pieces of older songs, repurposed, looped, scratched, transformed into something new without pretending it had no ancestors. Voices moved over rhythm with precision, play, defiance, story. Jazz’s processor lit up with recognition.
“Sampling,” Tony said. “Taking part of an existing recording and using it to build something else.”
Jazz stared at the speaker.
“Memory as instrument,” he said.
Tony paused.
Then, softer, “Yeah. That’s a good way to put it.”

Then he said, “Are they all bad?”
Jazz looked at him.
Tony did not look away.
It was the kind of question only someone outside a war could ask so plainly, and only someone too familiar with guilt could ask so carefully.
Jazz could have given the simple answer.
He did not.
“No,” he said. “Not all. Some are. Some made themselves that way. Some were made and chose not to stop being. Some joined for reasons that made sense once, before everything got worse. Some had no good choices and then kept making bad ones because turning around meant looking at what they’d done. Some would kill you without thinking. Some would think first and do it anyway. Some might’ve been friends in another life.”
Tony was silent.
Rhodes too.
Jazz leaned against the console, tired in a way recharge would not entirely fix.
“War makes categories easy,” he said. “Autobot. Decepticon. Enemy. Ally. Civilian. Asset. Threat. Useful, sometimes. Keeps you alive. Also lies to you if you let it. No symbol tells you everything. But choices do. Enough choices in a row, and you know what someone’s become.”

“You should remember more,” Jazz said.
Tony looked at him.
“The beautiful parts,” Jazz said. “If you’re gonna keep throwing yourself at the ugly ones.”

Tony wanted him safe.
Tony wanted him gone because gone meant safe.
Tony did not want him gone because gone meant gone.

“You didn’t save the whole war,” Jazz said. “You didn’t fix Cybertron. You didn’t solve every bad thing waiting for me. That ain’t failure. That’s just scope.”
Tony’s laugh came out surprised and almost painful. “Scope.”
“You helped the person in front of you,” Jazz said. “That counts.”

Three days was not a lifetime.
It was barely a mission delay.
It was a crash, a repair, a handful of songs, a few conversations under stress. Jazz had known bots for centuries and not trusted them with half as much as he had trusted Tony Stark with in seventy-two hours. But that did not mean they knew everything about each other. It did not mean the goodbye needed to be tragic. It did not mean either of them had the right to turn this into some grand wound.
Still.
