Maybe it's lonely at the top. Maybe it's lonely hiding. But Dai Yanqi can never regret having to wrap up almost everything that's made up her so that she could play Glory. Never regretted the fact that she would never stand next to her teammates when they won, all so that she could play. Never regretted it but on some days the taste of bitterness in the back of her throat was all too familiar.

“Uuuuum,” Shang Qinghua says, and a nervous laugh compulsively slips out of him. “How strange! I guess we aren’t the first people to step foot here in centuries? Someone must have left behind some, some sort of prank, or--”
“You,” Mobei-Jun grits out, and Shang Qinghua screams as he reaches out and snatches Shang Qinghua up by the collar of his robes, lifting him until not even the toes of his boots graze the floor. “You led me into a trap. What is this?”

“Cliopher Mdang,” said Kip, curtly, “fourth-degree secretary.” He bowed, because it had been rude to interrupt, and because the young man looked like he was probably one of the Upper Ten Thousand. The sort of person who could make his life hell if he wanted to.
The man didn't take offence, but nodded. “The Cavalier Conju enazo Argellian an Vilius,” he said politely, “Companion to Lady Lasara of Eldizorka, over there.” He waved his hand vaguely at the pile of skirts.

“Good,” came Lord Igel's voice from somewhere behind Kip. “Sayo Madon, stay where you are until the Glorious One dismisses you.”
“Yes, Lord Igel,” said Kip quietly, partially muffled by the bedspread.
There was the sound of the bed curtains being pulled closed, retreating footsteps, and the door closing. Then, silence.
Kip was in the Imperial Bed, with the Emperor. The curtains were closed, the attendants gone. His tutors had made it very clear what to expect if he was 'fortunate' enough to find himself here. Lord Igel had explained that the Emperor simply entertaining himself by making Kip his secretary.
