“Oh! Did you grow up eating this, Sanji? You’re from the North Blue, right?”

There is a brief moment where Sanji considers strangling the little doctor, as he can feel the focus of everyone on the ship land squarely on him.

Law’s eyes narrow at that, and Sanji can see them briefly flick in the direction of where Franky and Brook are now bemoaning their lack of knowledge about his background, and then slowly move back until they were focused on him instead.

    Oh. This was a mistake.

Trafalgar Law has the weirdest accent he's ever heard, and is clearly hiding something. Sanji is determined to get to the bottom of it.

The Straw Hats' chef speaks the Northern language like no one else Law has ever heard, and Law is intent on picking that mystery apart.

“It’s poison. It is, by definition, harmful,” Law hisses.

“It’s already done its job, young man. It can’t kill me twice,” Brook counters sternly.

These days, Brook can see death upon the people around him.

And Trafalgar Law? Well, he's absolutely drowning in it.

Right, Shachi thinks. Law and the concept of ‘change.’ Fuck.

“No,” Law finally says, with the conviction of a man ready to fight god.

Ah, hell. Here we go. “What do you mean, ‘no?’” Shachi groans back. “What more evidence do you need? It’s quite literally staring you in the face.”

Shachi's captain was intelligent, clever, and good at reading between the lines. Most of the time.

But damn, if he wasn't entirely oblivious to when a good thing was happening to him.

    Summary

    He ran.

It felt like he’d been running forever, even if very little of that time had been spent moving at speed. His flight from everything he’d ever known had been as calculated as best he could manage with what little resources he’d had at his disposal, all of his favors called in to get his family out of dodge before he made his own attempt at this journey solo.

The empty space over his heart where there once had been a court mark seared into his flesh gave him no comfort; the people after him had proven they didn’t need something like that to track him. They had far more refined and subtle ways of keeping courtiers confined to the home territories. And Ian was no powerful adept or high-ranking defector; he was a schoolteacher. Catching him should be the easiest thing in the world.

There is a place, some say, where the Gentry do not command loyalty. It is said they choose to earn it instead.

Now if only Ian can find it before his old master drags him back.

Takes place after the events of A Crown of Flowers.

    Summary

Taking his life in his hands, Shachi leans over into Law’s personal space and says, “I’m going to assume we managed to sail into this mess all on our own, instead of blaming Strawhat.”

His captain, tellingly, doesn’t respond beyond a wordless grumble.

They are definitely still somewhere in the Grand Line, more than halfway into the New World and all its nightmarish weather phenomenons- phenomena. Phenomeni? Whatever. Point is, there’s an island, with a small town, and a whole bunch of astounded eyes staring at the Polar Tang were she’s bobbing in the water at the end of their public dock. There’s even a newspaper, being clutched in Law’s hands, with a rather damning date printed at the top of the front page.

Getting sucked into an undersea whirlpool and spat back out thirty-odd years in the past is a new one for the Heart Pirates.
