She kills and eats their crewman, she demands Tuor’s hand in marriage, and for dessert, she plans to eat Elwing. A vile, terrible creature is she!

And then things take a turn for the worse.

“Er,” she said, instead of enacting violence, “I don’t know. I’m not wild about strangers.”
Eärendil, who was not so easily dissuaded once he had set his course, did not laugh. “But he knows you already. It is only your heart that is estranged.”

Maedhros can't see a single bit of furniture for all the sheets of paper, scrolls, discarded armour pieces, and musical instruments scattered across the room. He stops short, staring in horror.

Fingon winces. 'Ah. If it makes you feel better, the bedroom does not look like that.'

'Why does your desk look like that?' Maedhros asks unable to keep the horror out of his voice.
Fingon seeks Maedhros's help dealing with his mounds of paperwork. Maedhros is happy to help – on one condition.

"What I believe our dear cousin fears," Maglor drawls, "is what will happen to her in Sirion when Lady Nimloth opens her mouth and begins to speak of the particular, diligent attention that Aredhel has paid her during her captivity."

The survivors of Gondolin have made it to the Havens of Sirion. Idril writes to Maedhros to negotiate the ransom of Nimloth, who is a hostage of Amon Ereb, and of Aredhel, who is a Kinslayer.

Maedhros came out of the woods looking better than one might have expected. He was well fed and quite naked, and did not remember where he had been for the last three decades, or what he had been doing. But he remembered Fingon, had laid his head in Fingon’s lap to hear the old song of Valinor he played.

“I heard it in my roamings,” Maedhros says, with a halting smile. “It returned me to myself.”

And he is himself, Maglor thinks. A little stranger, a little more subdued. But he is Maitimo, who Maglor loves, and if that does not wholly soothe the sting of Maglor’s failures it does lessen it somewhat. Maglor decides he can live with that.

The change does come until later.
