She had him, there, because it wasn’t Jack’s idea: it was Charlotte’s. Charlotte claimed that, while doing some of her recommended exercise, she’d gone up to Jack’s floor for a visit. Upon reading some of the literature left at his bedside about recovering from traumatic brain injury, she’d realised that a holiday at Halstead was just the thing. It offered clean air and quiet, a full-time staff, and a supportive environment. After all, as Charlotte pointed out, if Jack went back to his flat and tried to resume life as usual, he’d soon be carousing with friends all night and set his recovery back weeks if not months.
(“Don’t you think so, Susie?” Charly had asked her, and Susie blinked her wide blue eyes in the way she only did when another person had a surprisingly good point to make, and Eddie felt the jaws of a trap close down over him.)

“Oh hey, babe!” Her voice was bright and brittle and young. A cold wash of adrenaline poured down from Eddie’s scalp. “I’ll be home soon, yeah? The girls and I went a little late. Sorry. I’m on my way.”
The total number of scenarios in which Eddie Horniman would make a call to Susie Glass at this hour, and receive that reception, resolved to exactly three. The first scenario was a mistake: her thinking that he was someone else. The second scenario was her pretending to be someone else. The third was some beautiful alternate universe where she was actually coming home to him after last call, tipsy and footsore, wearing a dress she’d put on to drive him out of his fucking mind, probably because he’d cocked up something major like a birthday or anniversary or some other cliché, because in that other universe those were the sum total of his problems. He wanted to kill that chap, in the other universe. Kill him, then steal his life, and his girl, and his tiny little problems.

Luckily, Dr. Grace doesn't seem to recognize him, buying Simon enough time to hatch yet another desperate plan for survival before his identity is discovered. SPOILERS FOR BRAND NEW DAY!!!!!!
It started like this. He’d been in the city for the day when everything went black. As if his entire conscious existence had been snapped out like a light. And then he was back, gasping for air without knowing why he lost it in the first place. It was almost as if he had blinked; a temporary brain freeze had it not been for the screams outside and the emergency sirens wailing in the distance. That and his crappy cup of coffee had gone cold.
It continued with movie night; his comment about the kid's love for Star Wars slipping out almost without him noticing; and to be dreadfully honest, he may not have even caught it himself had it not been for Morgan’s innocent, albeit confused question of “who’s Pete” that followed.
It finds him barreling into the too small ICU unit a few hours later after a hasty explanation to his wife and an adrenaline-fueled apology to his daughter; his brain looping between three distinct facts:
Critical condition.
Spider-Man.
Peter.
Oh god.
(Or Frank Castle really just wants to know why Tony Stark is in Spider-Man's hospital room looking like he's seen a ghost.)
