Summary
A cozy Verstave Belle Époque Farming Fic.
Verso Dessendre has been exiled from Paris for making one (1) very good joke about his father's cabbage-growing ancestors. His (very unjust and entirely inappropriate) punishment: one year on the neglected family farm outside Lumière, where he is expected to learn the value of honest work and return a better man. Verso intends to suffer with dignity and to complain extravagantly to his sister. Most of all, he intends to return to proper civilization the moment his sentence is served, and not a moment later.
Unfortunately, the villagers insist on making themselves his friends, a rude white dog takes possession of his barn, and Gustave Virlogeux, the unfairly handsome local blacksmith, has an appalling habit of smiling at him as though he might actually belong here.
And somewhere between planting his first peas and playing the village inn's dreadful piano, Verso begins to suspect that leaving in September might be the hardest part of all.
Or: In which a Parisian learns to farm, falls hopelessly in love with a blacksmith, and is continuously betrayed by a pair of yellow wellingtons.

Running across the country was supposed to be the end of it, but the panic follows Verso everywhere. Ducking into a random shop to escape a ghost from his past, his breakdown is cut short by a soft thump against his shin. Instead of a threat, he finds Noco—a wiggling bundle of comfort—and a beautiful stranger with a soft bonjour.

Verso is crying, when Monoco finally finds him.
Monoco has never seen him cry before. Not like this. He has seen boyish tears, long ago, over scraped knees and broken toys. Seen mournful ones, when Noco had broken and the first few Expeditions had fallen. Monoco has even see him cry from laughing too hard, tears bubbling up in the corner of his eyes from a particularly bad joke.
But now?
Now Verso is silently crying, pale eyes devoid of emotion and blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

Grey's Anatomy, but make it Verstave
Dr. Gustave Virlogeux, nerd and proud owner of a prosthetic arm, has studied himself half to death to land an intern position at Hôpital Sainte-Lumière. The reason is mainly Dr. Verso Dessendre's prosthetics research. That the man is not only a brilliant ortho fellow, but also unbelievably attractive, is a mere coincidence.
Dr. Verso Dessendre is a prodigy, a charmer, and so, so tired of pretending to be something he isn't. He takes one look at the flustered intern with the round glasses and thinks: Glasses is trouble. He's right. He's also not remotely prepared for what Gustave becomes once he's set his mind on proving, with increasing enthusiasm and creativity, that he is serious about him.
A story about gay awakenings (mistaken as gay panics), featuring: one elevator kiss that goes wrong, one ambulance confession that goes right, one ultrasound room that will never be the same, and a conference podium where the mask comes off for good.
Or: the cute nerdy intern practiced on bananas, weaponized an ultrasound probe, and found absolutely novel purposes for a surgical-grade prosthetic. The hot ortho fellow never stood a chance.

When the doctor performing his yearly prostate exam turns out to be Gustave Virlogeux (his high school crush, unmentioned for twenty-two years), Verso concludes that destiny has a cruel sense of humor. Five Augusts later, they still haven’t talked about it.
This year, however, the ultrasound probe is out for repair, and Gustave will have to do it the old-fashioned way.
Or: two men in their forties, one exam table, and a very expensive piece of imaging equipment put to a use its manufacturer did not describe in the manual.

Developing feelings for him was definitely never part of the plan. But then again, when has Gustave’s life ever followed any plans?
