The stranger opens his mouth. Ryland keeps going.
“Yes, really. Big shock, apparently. Anyway, it was nice meeting you, whoever you are, but I really need to get going.”
Ryland knows, distantly, somewhere beyond the haze of headache, that he is being rude. Nonetheless, he gives what might be his fakest apologetic smile to date and turns away, not waiting for an answer.
If he had the capacity for it in the moment, he would have seen the affronted look on the stranger’s (vaguely familiar?..) face, heard the way he repeated ''whoever you are?!'' as if it was an insult, and felt bad about it.But, well, he hadn’t.
