Voldemort succeeds in stealing the Philosopher’s Stone en route to Gringotts and making a new body for himself, but he still has his prophesized nemesis to worry about. Killing Harry didn’t work out so well the last time, so, remembering the Muggle expression of catching more flies with honey than vinegar, Voldemort decides to adopt him instead.
It’s the perfect scheme. All he has to do is pretend to love the kid and he won’t even want to vanquish him. The only thing which could spoil it is if Voldemort somehow actually developed genuinely fatherly love for Harry. But what are the chances of that happening, right?
