Shane’s stomach clenched in shame. Then, a moment later —

Well, he didn’t quite know what to make of that.or
Shane sent the "we didn't even kiss" text and it opened them up to being more emotionally honest with each other much earlier. Mostly rewritten canon events and added missing scenes between time jumps.

“Hollander,” suddenly Ilya gasps. He looks so shocked that his head must hurt more than normal. “Did you speed?”
Shane’s cheeks darken, Yuna didn’t think it was possible. Then, her son mutters something almost unintelligible.
“Am tired, Hollander. Please. What was that you said?” Ilya huffs, Shane’s hand still in his.
“I rented a McLaren so it would be fast. It was.”
No one finds out about Shane and Ilya’s relationship during Ilya’s stay at the cottage. However, during Ilya’s final season in Boston, the Raiders’ plane suffers a malfunction on their way to Ottawa, so Shane, who is in NYC for a Metros vs Admirals game, leaves the team behind without telling anyone and drives to Ottawa, renting a ridiculously fast and impossible-to-miss car to get to his boyfriend as soon as possible, not caring about coming out in the process. This decision has several consequences, including nine tickets for speeding.

Ilya is rescued from an Alpha sex ring in Russia and brought to Canada. Shane is an Omega hockey player. He’s pretty private about his personal life and secondary gender but his hockey playing speaks for itself. Ilya isn’t adjusting to life in the rescue facility for quite a few reasons. Which leads to him being placed with Shane for his rehabilitation.
This is my first time writing A/B/O! I’m writing a bit of an AU version where Alphas face more discrimination than Omegas which I know isn’t how it usually goes. Omegas still face some but in general they are respected and have equal rights. They are thought of as compassionate people that bring life into the world whereas Alphas are thought of as dangerous and even feral by some people. I'll get into it. Let's have a little fun :)

Ilya dragged in a shuddering breath against his skin and then pulled away, looking into Shane’s face again. His eyes were still a bit feral, and slowly tracked from Shane’s mouth back up to lock their gazes. He seemed to be working to wrest back some sense of lucidity.
“Hollander. Shane….” he gritted out, his hands sliding up to Shane’s biceps and tightening even further, like he was trying to find a way to hold himself up. “I can’t…. This can’t happen here.”
Right, Shane thought. Of course. The other omegas were sure to be triggered by Ilya going into heat and the overpowering cocktail of scents they were producing.
“Okay, okay,” he said, almost relieved to have a task at hand. “I’ll take you home. You can’t drive like this obviously. I…I will drive you.”
Or,
Shane Hollander meets Ilya Rosanov in Montreal while volunteering at a shelter for abused omegas. Ilya came to the shelter after escaping from his alphas and post-recovery became one of the staff there, working to help others like him. When Ilya unexpectedly goes into heat during one of their shared shifts, things change between them very quickly and in ways that are very surprising…at least to Shane.

“You are sub,” Ilya spoke with the water bottle waving, his voice casual. He ignored Shane’s defensive posture, gesturing to the trash can. “Sub get sick when not scene. When no Dom to scene with,” Ilya trailed off, looking Shane up and down, lingering on his collarless throat before continuing. “Is…unhealthy.”
In a world where subs, Doms, and Switches are biologically determined, subs are not accepted within a Dom-oriented sport like hockey.
