    Summary

The Asset stares at the child. The child is, presumably, staring back from behind the creepy white lenses of his domino mask, but it’s impossible to know for sure.

“Where in the everloving shit are your parents?” the Asset demands.

“Dead,” the kid says promptly, and grins at him again before darting forward to examine the restraints. “I got this, don’t worry.”

“I got questions for your legal guardian,” the Asset growls.

[Or: the Avengers acquire an emotional support Robin. Robin acquires an unwanted babysitter. The Winter Soldier just wants a nap.]

The Asset is being prepped for cryo when the shit hits the fan.

The fan in question is the Manhattan base of Hydra operations, currently housed in the experimental laboratory of a government-funded bioengineering company near Central Park. The shit takes the form of a gigantic alien whale, which crash-lands to a slow, skidding halt with its front end lodged firmly in a top-secret vault. It gives a few weak death throes, makes a noise like a deflating blimp, and dies.

    Summary

Roy sits down on the tarmac, opens his mouth to take a bite of his sad craft services sandwich, and almost drops it in his lap when New Guy bounces off Natasha, takes immediate damage from her murder stare, and murder stares back.

    Oh no.

    He's perfect.

Natasha is going to adopt him before Roy can marry him.

Roy is going to have Natasha as a mother-in-law. The thought is absolutely terrifying.

"Sandwich," Jason whispers in Roy's ear, jabbing an unreasonable elbow into his ribs.

"Cut it out!" Roy hisses, conscious of the cameras.

"You cut it out." Jason sits down aggressively close, snatching his sandwich and forcing Roy to scoot over or fall over. "Your mooning is getting between me and my lunch."

Red Would: Okay. we're revisiting that later. Right now: how do you know this much about Tim?
Red Hood: I have my sources.
Red Hood: Primarily: he's my little brother.
    Red Would: You're shitting me.
Red Hood: Just because I majored in English doesn't mean we're an entire family of mathematical incompetents.
Red Would: No. That's not it. Not only is he hotter than the sun, his shoes cost more than our monthly rent.
    Red Hood: He's adopted.
    Red Would: You're all adopted.

    Chapter 6:

He sounds jealous. He might be. Jealousy comes easy to Stark. Someone taught him that the only acceptable ways to show affection are jealousy and expensive gifts.

There are emotions you have to pry out of Stark like you’re taking the shell off a turtle, like it’ll kill him to let you have them. But he’ll hand you the ugly ones for free.

    Chapter 11:

“I mean,” the bartender continues, “who the fuck are you? The health inspector? The Goddamn EPA?”

Bucky clocks the particularly aggrieved way he says EPA. “You have a history of difficulties with the Environmental Protection Agency?”

    Chapter 14:

He’s trying to be better, sure. But mostly he’s just trying to be the person he needed six years ago, and every day since.

    Chapter 16:

It’s bullshit, he thinks. The choices people make out of the options they have. All this courage packed in bodies that aren’t strong enough to fight. Jason’s no better than any of them, worse than most of them, and he’s alive, and they aren’t.

    Chapter 20:

Jason groans like Dean just kicked down his door to serve papers. “Asshole, I’m gonna get you Superman’s number.”

“Oh, will he send me sexy pictures too?” Dean asks. Beside him, Sam chokes on his water.

    Chapter 28:

He’s pretty good at letting the hit land and roll off him, clocking the memory and the inevitable spike of panic, but letting it go before it can burrow in. It’s been years since some off-hand joke about We need another Snap has sent him spiraling.

    Chapter 31:

There’s always Clint to worry about. There used to be others to worry about, too. And now there’s just Clint, and that’s how Tony learned that building weapons and fighting back only ever served to get better people killed.

"I'm just scared," Steph says, and practices the shape of it, forced out of her mouth.

    "You're just scared," Jason confirms.

"I'm just scared," Steph says, one more time. It does help a little. "I'm just scared," she says again. "I'm just scared. I wasn't supposed to tell. If I'm ungrateful, he can make it bad for my mom."

"Make what bad?" Jason asks quietly.

"I don't know," says Steph, as she gestures with one hand vaguely. "The world?"

"Yeah," Jason says with a sigh. "Yeah, someone told me that once upon a time too."

Steph hears her voice. "I think most of them forget," she says. "I don't think many grown ups remember that when you're little, you're little.".

"When you're little, you're little?" Jason echoes.

"You're small," Steph hears from her own body, "and the world is so big. You're not tall enough to reach things yet. Or see over all the counters. And grown-ups are big. And they're a lot louder, and longer, and stronger than just a kid."

"That's true," she hears Jason agree.

"They can pin you down if they want," Steph's voice says, conversationally. A finger scratches a thread in a fold of fabric. It's a quilt. She's on the floor.

Dick didn’t have fond memories of being Tim’s age. Of being a smaller and weaker version of himself. Dick had been able to take care of himself and Bruce had always looked out for him but…

But. It had been rough sometimes. Sometimes being a kid just sucked.

Dick still thought of Slade sometimes.
