Ah, shit. Jason’s has a rough idea of rough living, but a street rat would experience life a lot different to a Literal Street Rat. Waylon’s got it rough but now that he’s borderline the de-facto union leader of the Great Gotham Underground Coalition, half the service workers in town will comp his food on sight. Grace has no such social influence, or Jason would’ve heard of her before. He glances at her, and feels some weird solidarity of being a thing that is of but maybe isn’t welcome to Gotham.
Maybe she got made a monster, too.

"You're small," Steph hears from her own body, "and the world is so big. You're not tall enough to reach things yet. Or see over all the counters. And grown-ups are big. And they're a lot louder, and longer, and stronger than just a kid."
"That's true," she hears Jason agree.
"They can pin you down if they want," Steph's voice says, conversationally. A finger scratches a thread in a fold of fabric. It's a quilt. She's on the floor.

On the fourth day, it becomes clear that Joe is organizing something—more muscle than usual, a few more Black Mask affiliates than there should be. The few glimpses of Joe that Dick gets, he’s on his phone, speaking rapidly and gesturing emphatically.
On the fifth day, everything is quiet. No one comes, no one goes.
On the sixth day, Tim calls Dick: they’re not sure where Jason is. And yeah, maybe that’s just normal, and they’re not panicking yet. But they’re not sure where he is. And they’re about to start looking.
And on the seventh day, Bruce shows up at his door with Jason standing next to him, pale and hacking out a cough, putting too much weight on Bruce’s shoulder, and says: “I need to ask you a favor.”

Damian would grow older, bigger, stronger.
When Damian hit Tim it wouldn’t just sting, it would bruise. When he cornered Tim he couldn’t just shove him aside. Not if Damian grew to be as big and broad as Bruce. Heck, even Talia had a bit of height over Tim. That temper, those issues he was “working on”, his... hatred for Tim.
It wouldn’t go away. It would get worse. Harder to deal with. Harder to ignore.

Jason's brow furrows harder, this time with a judgemental cast. Out loud, he says, "Is that your whole argument?"
"Pretty convincing, right?" Steph says, waggling her eyebrows. Jason scoffs. "Listen, if you want to head out, you can. I get it, it's been a long fucking night. But you did me a favor and pitched in and fought some demons or whatever, so the least I can do in return is booze you up."
She certainly couldn't blame him for leaving—fighting demons tends to sap your social battery. But then again, he didn't have to follow her back to her apartment. He's had every opportunity to call it quits and dip, but he's still here. He's still willing to be around her. That probably counts for something.
Jason's mouth twists and pinches in on itself. Finally, he sighs, holds up a finger, and says, "One glass. Then I'm going home to take a fucking shower and crash."

Jason was a better fledging than he had been. Jason didn’t snap at Bruce’s milk-white wrist or fixate on the pulse of the vein in the column of his neck. He could speak and use language like a person. No one stood around and wondered if he was a part of his parents’ death.
Jason kept the instincts down with an iron will and didn’t attack like a little animal in Bruce’s house. Jason was polite and seemed to have effortlessly slotted himself back into normal life. Jason wasn’t letting vampirism take the best parts of him.
He was better than Dick even in this.

For some reason, the idea of employer-matching on his 401k is hilarious to him.
