A few years later, when they’re both Captains of their respective teams, Ilya comes out as bisexual. Shane immediately makes his move to lock down the boy he’s had a crush on all this time, before it’s too late. After a surprise at a post-game press conference and a challenge from the Raiders, Shane has to convince Ilya he is serious about having a real relationship in front of professional hockey and the entire internet.     “Ah, you are afraid?” the angel asks, in a Russian accent.

    Shane doesn’t say anything. He pretends to keep reading even though he never started.

    “Hmm,” the angel says. “I am supposed to tell you, be not afraid. But I do not like telling people what to do.”

    Shane somehow doubts that’s true.

    “Do you have a message for me?” Shane asks, glancing towards the angel now, but only out of the corner of his eyes.

    “Yes, I do,” the angel says. In his limited peripheral vision, Shane can see that the angel’s deep cupid’s bow is now stretched into a broad V by the smug grin spreading across his lips. “Here is the message: you are gay.”

    “It really fucking hurt to just be ignored for six months.”

    Ilya looks at him again, nodding as he runs his finger along Shane’s bare collarbone. He shifts so that he’s lying beside Shane more than hovering on top of him, but keeps touching him and doesn’t go far.

    “You can call me sensitive or whatever, but I don’t think I can do this if you’re just going to ignore me for another six months or however long after we say goodbye tonight.” Shane continues, trying to subtly wipe his wet eyes but of course Ilya notices.

    “Hollander-” He reaches up to wipe the tears away, but Shane lightly pushes his hand away and shakes his head.

    “I guess I’m not cut out for casual.” He whispers. “Because this has never really felt like nothing to me, and I can’t pretend that it is. You aren’t nothing to me.”

    or, the boys talk in Vegas because they can't fight their feelings anymore.

    He turned on the car and briefly rested his forehead on the steering wheel, groaning.

    “Shane,” he muttered, “you absolute lovesick fool. I can’t believe I have to do this.”

    Shane Hollander has never heard of Ilya Rozanov until the KHL star lands in Canada.

    They hook up. They catch feelings. Shane runs.

    Ilya probably shouldn’t take relationship advice from Hayden Pike, but options are limited.
