    Summary

The crux of the matter is that Kakashi’s old. By the time he finally gives up the hat, he’s nearly forty and growing older, and while he’s faced death too many times to still remember to fear it, he certainly thinks about it. He can’t help it. He blames the Nidaime — staring at Senju Tobirama’s reanimated face reminds Kakashi of everything that will die with him: his clan, their history, an entire generation. The realization leaves him unsettled, and as his body starts to ache more and more, he finds himself wishing for a world in which he isn’t so alone.

Or, Kakashi returns to the Hatake compound in an attempt to speak with his ancestors and promptly forgets that the Hiraishin is, above all else, an experimental time/space jutsu. By activating it, he finds himself in a world not quite like his own.

"I’m home,” he says, so low and soft Minato can’t hear him, but — but maybe Naruto can, wherever he is, and he’ll know that Kakashi gets it, that he knows, that he — that Kakashi’s finally found a home to come back to."
    - chapter 4

" Plants have a way of enduring, Tenzō told him, curling a tentacle of ivy around his fingers; the plant would eventually go to Kakashi, mysteriously appearing in his non-ANBU apartment a few days after his appointment to Seven, but then it had only been Tenzō’s newest illegal creation. Danzō didn’t like the mokuton being used inside the village, and that meant no plants, no growth, no life could exist in Tenzō’s room — so, they existed in Kakashi’s instead. Cacti can go several months without water. Oak tree bark is thick enough to survive most fires. Roots can break rock, concrete, brick — anything.

At the time, Kakashi thought Tenzō had been speaking about himself. Tenzō endured, Tenzō went months without contact with the sun and sky, Tenzō could break through anything, but Tenzō had been looking at Kakashi when he said it, his round eyes gone tawny in the sun, searching. Kakashi had been held fast by them, the water to Tenzō’s root, sucked up and sucked in, and he thought, briefly, of the Shodai and Nidaime, Hashirama and Tobirama. He and Tenzō hadn’t been them, not exactly, but they had been something. Kakashi had never been bitten by the Hatake agricultural bug, not like Sakumo or even Jiraiya, but — but Kakashi, when he slept, had fallen asleep to the scent of ivy and mokuton, Tenzō’s chakra stamped into each leaf and grain of potting soil, and when Kakashi woke, it was always to that little plant on the sill. He knew, that if he were ever in trouble, all he would have to do was touch the edge of the pot, and the plant would do what plants did — grow, conquer, eat — and Tenzō would come, wild in a way Kakashi wasn’t, all the wood in the room shaking itself awake. Senpai, he would say, and Kakashi doesn’t know how plants speak, has never run his fingers over a tree’s trunk and been told its story, but he knows Tenzō; senpai and kōhai had been as close as they could come to niisan and otōto, and maybe that’s why Kakashi dips his finger into the planter’s soil, seeping some of his new suiton into its half-cracked seeds. "
    - chapter 9

    ...

"As long as there are still people willing to look across the room and see the miserable, wretched boy sitting across from them, as long as there are still shinobi who will hear the cry of a child who has suddenly, once again, lost everything they’ve ever loved, as long as there are still blond little boys who will dab the fever-sweat off the head of the sensei they never should’ve been saddled with, who will cry come morning, asking why didn’t you tell us you were hurt? We could’ve helped, then the village will always be the village, and Kakashi will always fight for it, will always fight to keep it, and — and when he goes, his soul won’t be in a mask. It’ll be in sword steel or wheat field or sky thunder; it’ll be in his three little genin overgrown, his blond little boy glancing up at him from underneath the rim of the hat, beaming, and it’ll be in Tenzō’s flyaway seedlings, but it’ll also be in all nameless ANBU faces, all the agents Kakashi managed to steal out from underneath Danzō’s greedy, devastating hands, all the souls Kakashi got to see awake and alive and free across from him in the panel hearings."
    - chapter 11

" You are not mine, his mother told him even then, even so young, reading the Senju within his face, and neither was Sakumo. She knew no grip with which to hold them, and so Sakumo had been passed into the cradle of Jiraiya’s skinny arms. Jiraiya bore the weight as best he could. It had not been so difficult. Sakumo had only been bone below skin and a chest full of rabbit-breath, then: up and down and up and down, over and over again until the morning came " - chapter 19

Of all the reactions people have had to Wheeljack's scars, Starscream's is definitely the weirdest.

Or Starscream forgets some key cultural differences between Autobots and Decepticons- mainly those surrounding scars and a staked claim.

    Summary

A Prime is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to… give or take that one small paracausal nudge.

Or, that time the Matrix got impatient and stole a truck...

It's only going to get more and more hazardous to binge all of this:
✔️ Optimus Prime being iconically wholesome
✔️ Cybertron being an exotic mechanical wonderland
    ✔️ Mystery, adventure, and intrigue
✔️ Not so much a slow burn as a long fuse
    ❌ Civil war

I love watching Optimus learn to navigate his new position in the world and seeing the people around him learn to navigate with him and how he's doing things in contrast to how the primes of the past acted. The character interactions and plot are great.

    Summary

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.

Right up until Rocky asks another question.

“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”

Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”

Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.

“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”

I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.

“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”

I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.

    “Grace. When last time, question.”

I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.

“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”

    I can taste grass.
