Summary
Breathe in, breathe out. Listen. Rinse and repeat until—
There. Footsteps and then a surprisingly familiar voice.
“Kaz, where in the saints’ names are you? Damn place is like a maze—”
“Nina?” He rasped, jolting where he stood. “Zenik? Did I die and go to hell?”
The footsteps paused and then hurried in his direction. The doorknob jiggled as Nina cursed on the other side in Ravkan. Then—“Shut up, Brekker, how do I get this thing open?”
“Have you considered unlocking it?” Kaz asked.

Summary
Images flashed through Jesper’s mind in time with his pulsing heartbeat, each one a reminder of why he had to move quickly. In his mind’s eye he could see the Black Tips closing the distance between them at a sprint, a war cry echoing in the caverns of their open mouths. He could hear the single word that fell from Kaz’s lips, driving an ice pick into Jesper’s chest.
Trap.
OR: a job goes south, leaving Jesper and Inej to deal with the consequences.

Summary
Kaz Brekker doesn't experience such mortifying emotions as envy often, but when he does, boy does he experience them.
There's just something about Matthias Helvar that rubs Kaz the wrong way. His piety and sincerity mean Kaz could never think of him as anything but gullible, a pigeon waiting to be fleeced. It's not charitable but it's true. That's all there is to it. Nothing else. Seriously. That's it.
Or: Matthias tries to seduce Kaz and succeeds.

Summary
That criminal, that demjin, that creature of dark places and sick bargains, had put Matthias on the ground and rendered him powerless, taunted him, pressed that cane to his throat and held Matthias’s life in his leather-gloved hands. Matthias was shocked, furious, indignant…
He let out a breath and forced himself to admit it. He was hard.
What in Djel’s name was wrong with him?

Summary
Matthias is leaning seemingly casually against a certain bookshelf in the university library. He has been here for hours, and watched the amount of a particular book dwindle on the shelf until only one remains.
Nina's class doesn't let out until quarter past.
It's quarter to now, and he has taken up his post as guardian. Nina needs that book. She was talking about it just this morning when he not-so-accidentally ended up in line behind her at her favorite café, how she hoped there would still be a copy left when she got out of class in the afternoon.
He'll be damned if there isn't one.
