They didn't own a toolbox, so Phil's old cordless hammer drill had to be the stand-in. It was a silly prop, just something for Dan to carry up the stairs as he came into the house, wearing an old tank top and baggy pants. He didn't really own "builder" clothes, but it didn't matter.
