What Lando doesn't know is that none of it was luck. Not the teammate assignment. Not the years they've spent inseparable. Not even the way every person who ever threatened to come between them has quietly, mysteriously disappeared from his life. It’s 1:18am. Oscar knows he should put his phone down, he knows he should simply roll over and pretend he hadn’t even seen the text — instead his fingers fumble across the bright LED screen.
[logan: can I come up? can’t sleep]
Oscar tells himself that he’s too tired, that he’s sick of making space for Logan’s long limbs, that Logan’s early alarm will rob him of a few precious minutes of sleep. Oscar tells himself that he doesn’t want Logan there, that he didn’t spend the last five hours willing his phone to light up with Logan’s name. He replies again.

He hadn’t talked to Oscar in years. Not since half a year in F1 had gone by, and one was clearly excelling and the other was not. It wasn’t Logan's fault. He had tried, he really did, to maintain some sense of normalcy with Oscar, but the replies kept getting slower and slower until there wasn’t much to talk about in the first place.

But at least his boss Sebastian is encouraging of what he calls "the most sickeningly adorable romance the office has ever seen, and a nice break from having to sit through meetings pretending not to notice Lewis and Nico having copious amounts eye-sex."

Later, he’ll blame his distraction but honestly, even before he opens his door and steps inside, he has a premonition. Later, they’ll ask how he could have missed the smell. How he still walked in and closed the door behind him without seeing, without knowing. He’ll say maybe his body was moving on autopilot and it won’t even be a lie. But that is later.
Whatever it is, by the time he consciously registers the scent, it’s already too late.
Nico’s head snaps up, eyes locking on Lewis and Lewis freezes. It makes sense now, what that intensity in Nico’s eyes was, what the edge to his scent meant, why he looked away.
“Lewis,” he says, like a drowning man tasting air again, like he’s seen the answer to a prayer, like the sun has come out after a storm. In a flash, he’s on his feet and no longer kneeling by Lewis’ bed.
Or: Lewis is 15 when he learns Nico is an omega. It changes little. It changes everything.

Summary
Lewis has gotten over Nico. He got over Nico a long time ago. In fact, he doesn’t even think about Nico anymore! He’s spent a good few years repressing and locking away any ounce of affection he has for the too pretty German with the cupid’s bow mouth and the ability to turn Lewis into a lovesick teenager. He’s done with all that.
But when a furious and vengeful Charles Leclerc stomps up to Lewis one fine day with a video clip of Nico and Max Verstappen casually dining (together!) at a Melbourne cafe, Lewis…Lewis may have short circuited.
It’s the only real explanation he has for giving into Charles’s demands that they also eat dinner together at the small, obscure bistro Nico and Max just happen to be RSPV’d at. And maybe Lewis put a little more thought into his “super spy” outfit than usual. So what? Yeah, the shirt he’s wearing is the same one Nico once said he looked “edible” in but this was also a very inconspicuous shirt and Lewis is trying to be a good spy.
And so what if he and Charles get the table right next to Nico and Max? And so what if he’s glaring daggers at Verstappen? And so what if Charles is suddenly getting up, fire in his eyes, ready to dump a bottle of wine on Nico—oh shit.

He resumes, just wanting to be done with this now, raising his arm again—only to find his hands trembling at the action, unable to drive the blade into his target.

His shaking hand pulls the robe apart, properly this time, coming face to face with a very peculiar but exact same mark he has on his inner thigh.
Charles Leclerc is his soulmate.
Or Max is an assassin sent to kill the Ferrari heir, only to discover his target is his soulmate. Devastated by the reveal, he runs away, or at least tries to—knowing there is no refuge back home. But Charles Leclerc is not easy prey to shake; once he finds out someone almost got to him, he won't rest until he finds the truth. And so begins the hunt.
