It must be the Nen ability. Gon must under the influence of something extremely sinister; it’s the only reason he’d be talking like this. Whatever’s been done to him is profound, corrupting his very capacity for reason."
Gon gets hit with a mysterious Nen ability that inexplicably makes him fall in love with Killua. He doesn't mean any of it, of course. It's entirely artificial. It has to be. As if he would ever actually have feelings for Killua.

“Wanna try, Killua?” Gon asks, breathless and grinning despite being tossed to the dirt less than thirty seconds ago.
Killua tears his gaze away from Gon’s bright face to the open field in front of him. A crowd of students are scattered around in an uneven circle, all cheering loudly as a boy and girl take their places on opposite sides of the ring.
“I’d need to know what the hell is even going on before I agree to anything,” Killua says, exasperated, and Gon’s grin only grows. “Why are you all hurling yourselves at each other like that?! You’re lucky you didn’t get your front two teeth knocked out!”
Gon laughs. “Don’t be silly, Killua! It’d be impossible to hit each other; you'd have to be soulmates for that to happen!”
(In a universe where a person cannot physically kiss someone who isn’t their soulmate, a class of idiotic high schoolers spend their free period running towards each other to see who could get the closest before the universe repels them)

Gon, intrigued by his new friend, continues to replay their encounter even when the summer is over.
The next summer, Gon returns to search for Killua’s company. He finds him. And he continues to seek him out the next year, and the next, and the next.
Soon, all Gon can think about is going to see Killua again. Yet some things about their meetings are decidedly strange. For one, Killua never seems to remember him. He’s always wearing the same clothes. And, now that Gon is old enough to see it, he always looks a little sad…

On the upside, Gon always has a summer job as a lifeguard; it’s a fulltime gig keeping tourists clear of the island’s strong rip currents. On the downside, his island is having its homes gobbled up by investors, and there’s a rumor that half of downtown is going to be bought up and bulldozed to make way for a luxury resort. Some real estate tycoon named Silva Zoldyck has been making pitches across the archipelago. Gon dislikes the man on principle, and by a twist of fate, he ends up saving Zoldyck’s son from drowning.
(In Killua Zoldyck’s defense, he’s a city boy and oceans don’t work like pools.)
