They were “eccentric,” my mom used to say in a sour tone with her face twisted up like she’d eaten a lemon, but I remember them as more than South Bama’s resident environmentally-conscious oddballs. I remember them from the New Golden Age of Television, when Swamp Monarchy aired in the August of 2008 on A&E and ushered in a new era of reality TV that would only be just barely surpassed by Jersey Shore in pure trashy subcultural pizazz.
