“You don’t trust us, do you?” she says suddenly. It’s impossible to gauge any emotion in her voice or expression; all he can tell is that her gaze is boring into him in a way that makes him feel like an insect pinned in a display case.
The seal on his arm demands an honest answer. “…I don’t,” he reluctantly agrees.
“That’s unfortunate,” Restys says, looking unperturbed. “Though I can’t blame you for being wary, I do hope we’ll be able to convince you that we only have your best interests at heart.”
That’s unlikely to happen, not that Tartah’s going to say that if he doesn’t have to. Despite her non-reaction, he can’t help but think he’s made a mistake — so after a moment of hesitation, he adds, “I wish I trusted the Brimmed Caps. It would mean I trusted someone.”
Restys gives him a scrutinizing look, resting her chin on her hand. “So you don’t trust the Pointed Caps either, then.”
Tartah snorts, and here at least his survival instincts and the demands of the truth spell and what he wants to say are all in alignment, even if he feels a hint of guilt out of habit if nothing else. “No way.”

Ed doesn’t let her come with him on his quest, or tell her the full truth of where it leads him. He doesn’t ask her for advice or talk to her about how he’s feeling. But he comes to her, again and again, for this. Edward Elric does not need anyone’s help or support or kindness, but he needs a leg to stand on and an arm to work alchemy with, and he trusts Winry with providing them without a second thought.
This is the only thing Ed will let her do for him. And so she does it, and she does it excellently.

“You’re serious,” Frazie said after a moment, the realization hitting her like a well-aimed pinecone to the face. “You’re actually planning on running away.”
Raz lifted his chin. “What are you gonna do about it?” he challenged. “Tell Mom and Dad?”
Frazie was silent.
She should tell them. That was the right thing to do. But… What would even be the point? No one else would actually believe that Raz would just… leave. Not Mirtala and Queepie, who were too young to really understand the family tensions, and not Mom or Dad or Dion, who cared more about the family than anything and even now couldn’t seem to figure out that Raz didn’t.
Aquatos didn’t just desert each other. They were equal parts family and circus act, each with a role and an understanding of where they were needed, loyal to each other before all else. They had nothing else in the world but each other and their little traveling circus, and so they put all they had into that. That was how the Aquatos were supposed to work.
Frazie knew better than that.
Frazie knew Raz better than that, and she knew Raz was serious.

The rest of the household will see it come the morning.
