Summary
Sometimes part of your mind starts asking questions that, in all likelihood, no one else in the history of the universe has ever asked. Namely, what would happen if the Eridian students tagged along to Earth and enrolled in grad school. Then you look up a few months later when, oops, you have a document with six fanfics and 40k words.
This may have gotten a bit out of hand.
Featuring: Mark doing astrophage DIY on Mars, text messages with the Hail Mary, Ryland explaining how to choose a PhD advisor, Rocky holding an AMA, Eva's niece as a history professor, and Mindy being fluent in Eridian.

I blink. Surely that's just, "Friend?"
"No, know friend. Need friend but more. Friend meaning-intensifier deepest-affection-indicator legal-obligation-indicator."
Fun fact: Rocky's language (Not the only one Eridians have! But they don't have quite as many as Earth, presumably because they live so much longer. Or maybe because their memories are so good, I don't know, I'm not a linguist) loves declension. It's a real pity Ilyukhina isn't here, she would definitely be picking it all up quicker than I am.
"Uh," I say. "Partner, I guess? But that's not exclusively platonic, and you aren't usually… married? Eridians marry friends?"
"Some friends," Rocky says, as if the distinction should be obvious. "Best friends. Most best friends. Rocky marry Grace, question?"

“Ah, I was just, err…” Yao stutters but nobody comes to his defense, not even Stratt. Grace has his hands on his hips, obviously expecting an answer. “You are speaking to us as if we’re children.”
Grace’s neck turns red in embarrassment and indignation. “No. Children know how to keep quiet and not interrupt a lecture. Especially a lesson as important and dangerous as this one, where I am showing you an alien microorganism that can bury us alive at the bottom of the ocean if proper safety procedures are not followed.”
The astronauts shift uncomfortably where they are standing. Yao is blinking rapidly.
“Now, if everyone can put their listening ears on, please.” Stratt nearly rolls her eyes but she does what he asks of them. She pretends to dig around in her pocket and then takes her imaginary listening ears and places them over her very real ears as if she’s putting headphones on.

Before Dr. Ryland Grace became the lead expert on astrophage, he was simply Mr. Grace, science teacher at Grover Cleveland Middle. Now that he is in charge of educating adults, it's hard to tell where Mr. Grace ends and where Dr. Grace begins. Director Eva Stratt has no problem with this.

I think that it can’t be me, but — yeah, okay, that’s my nose, those are definitely my ears. And there’s my name, scrawled onto a notecard and tucked inside the clear pocket on the outside of the container.
These are the first things I remember about myself — I once wore my hair long, and my name is Grace.

“Grace?” asks Rocky, impatience laced with concern.
“It’s a—” I mumble, my mouth loose with shock around the words. I hold onto the wall to stop myself from spinning, unable to tear my eyes away as the thing we’ve been calling a box shifts irrevocably into something else, because inside it is something eerily familiar. It’s hard to tell the gender or other features, harder still to tell if they’re even alive, but—
“What, question?” Rocky asks through the radio, and I can’t bring myself to turn around to face him. My breath is thin in my lungs, my chest stinging sharply with dread.
“It’s—” I say again, fumbling blindly for the door of the airlock. “Rocky, I think that’s a person.”

Or: While running on autopilot on the way to Erid, Mary detects something that’s not stardust and nebulae. Getting into a spacesuit and retrieving it from outside the ship seems like a great idea, right up until the point where it doesn’t.
Somehow, pulling a human from a box some sixteen-ish light years from Earth is even weirder than running into aliens.
But let it not be said that Ryland Grace is not adaptable.

When Grace gets seemingly teleported by means unknown into the SM-13 right as it was nearing The Light, both Simon and Grace have no idea what is happening. Grace knows he was supposed to be in his house on Erid, Simon knows this new guy cannot possibly be a hallucination, and Ava, upon hearing Grace ramble about theories for how he got there, knows that new guy is Smart. Could-Secure-Our-Survival Smart.

Rocky emerges, and his body language alone is enough to get me going. I struggle around my laugh, clamping my hand over my mouth. He waits patiently for me to gather myself.
“Eridians are gay,” he declares. “I escape closet for all of them.”
I fail. I tuck my glasses into the collar of my shirt so I can put my head in my hands, wiping tears as they come.
“Rocky,” I say between giggles, “Rocky, I don’t think—I don’t think you can apply human sexuality to Eridians.”
Something in him shifts, then. He perks to attention from his relaxed state, and though he has no eyes or facial features, I swear I can feel his gaze narrow on me.
“I also read about gay rights,” he says slowly, warily. “Read that gay humans are hated some places. Bad.” He comes closer, looking up at me with all the accusation his flat face can muster. “You hate gay, question?”

"Singing a courtship song to Grace while ey falls asleep has become part of their nightly ritual. It is different than singing with Adrian; when they sang to each other, their voices joined in harmony, and the song resonated with their mutual pleasure. But Grace is human. Ey has no concept of what the song means between Eridians, and no way of singing the song back to Rocky, even if ey wanted to. There is no harmony here, merely a one-way message of love that Grace is incapable of sending back.
Still, a one-way message is better than none. And the way that Grace’s muscles relax during each night’s song, eir body limp and at ease, is a message in its own way."

"It's a belief that when a person dies, they're reborn in a new body to live a whole new life. There's no evidence of it though, it's just one belief system among many."
"Yes, like that. It's only for Entities though, not every Eridian. They moult their old carapace, and grow a new one from the materials surrounding them in their grave. That is why it is very important to pick the best materials when building a grave."

Summary
After 27 years, Earth's Hail Mary comes through. The world has been forever changed, and billions died because of the Astrophage crisis, but space agencies have done their best to survive and keep their telescopes pointing to Tau Ceti. After the beetles are spotted, Eva Stratt forces her way into the CSA office to learn what the Hail Mary crew discovered. Downloading the data is slow and happens in pieces, so the team has to try piecing together what happened out in the Tau Ceti system.
Eva Stratt is faced with the reality of what she did to Grace, watching him deal with the situation she put him in, leading to a complex mix of emotions. Part of her wishes things could have been different. But she knows that wishing on a star is useless.
