This is a bittersweet and beautiful canon divergent look at returning to the league that devastated Shane and Ilya. Ten years on from a universe in which no team signs Shane after they're outed, Shane is considering returning to coaching for Ottawa.
In all the deluge of fic I've read in this fandom, this is somehow the first story I've read in which being outed ends their hockey careers but not their relationship. It's a great concept, meaningfully explored here. The shape of Shane and Ilya's relationship is well depicted, first in happy days and then as they weather conflict.

This is a fun and sweet story with some fabulous Shane/Ilya pining and a delightful Cliff. I like the fact that Shane sleeping with Cliff provides them with a common friend once the angst is settled. I like that the pining takes a different shape here but the end game stays the same. I like Shane having the chance for some satisfying, non-fraught sex before he and Ilya go exclusive. Good stuff.

Summary
Following an afternoon of sex and tuna melts, Shane goes searching for the explicit rules of what being 'friends with benefits' entails. In his humble opinion, they're nailing it.
Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?
A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.
"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”
He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"

Thoughtfully designed AU that keeps the boys in character. Because they spend so much more time together than the canon characters, there's a bit of a "seven YEARS of misunderstandings" hurdle to explain keeping them in a much more intimate situationship but having that be salvageable. This story does that well, though. It's stressful, but also fun and sweet and enjoyable to read.

Summary
Of course, Shane wished that he was the one still playing right now. Obviously, he would shove his own mother out of the way to trade places with Ilya on the ice, and Mom would dust herself off and tell Shane to go get 'em. But of all the ways that everything could have ended up, this wasn't so bad.
After getting eliminated in the first round by Ottawa, Shane goes to Centaurs/Admirals Game 3. But first he has to contend with sorting through his baseball cap collection, ignoring Hayden's thoughts on WAG jackets and the part where Tanner Dillon doesn't know how to get pucks in the net.

Highly entertaining and thoughtful romp. Shane is young, determined, and ready to accomplish his very specific goal. Great story for seeing Shane's leadership style in some high stakes shenanigans. Ilya's attitude toward Shane evolves over the course of the story, from absolutely closed off and angry, to cautiously open, to willing to follow him anywhere.
Great cast of characters, very fun with just enough suspense, tension, and sweetness.

Summary
When I set out to write an article about the complicated history of bisexual men in sports I thought my research would take me all over the place, to different leagues, generations, cities. I was prepared to spend my time cobbling together stories to create a mosaic of an experience that not many people are willing to talk about. I thought I’d have to really get deep in the weeds with my editor to make this the kind of story that anyone was willing to print. Instead, I spent most of my time in Ottawa, of all places, because when it comes to bi athletes, all roads lead to Ilya Rozanov.

“I do love you, you fucking weirdo,” Shane says. He pulls back in time to see Ilya’s lip quiver a little, and he blinks, alarmed. “What? Are you okay?”
“Yes,” Ilya says immediately, and he swallows and looks down, almost like he’s nervous. “Shanya, I love you so much it feels like it must always have been true. That I have loved you my whole life.”
He says the words with such solemnity, slow and perfect. He never calls Shane Shanya unless he’s feeling particularly tender, vulnerable, broken open. It is a name saved for the very good days and also the very bad ones. For a moment, Shane’s brain stalls out, hunting through his mental calendar. It’s not their anniversary…
“Sometimes I feel that way too,” he says gently. “You’ve always been… I don’t know. I don’t know who I am without you being such a big part of things. Since the start.”
“Most of our lives,” Ilya says, and his smile widens into a proper grin. “I made calendar reminder to tell me. It went off this morning when you were in the shower. Today is the day.”
