He made it again today, standing on his grandfather’s porch in a soft blue dawn, holding Sam around the waist as they stared down to the overgrown lawn. There was an arm in the zinnias, and a leg under the old oak tree, and the rest of a body laid out on an Adirondack chair, its throat chewed open and its eyes cast up to the sky.

“Stay away from me,” Michael finally snaps, hands outstretched, the third time that David tries to grab him by the arm and pull him in.
David, who had been halfway through some sort of joke about something that happened at last night’s gig, pauses, and then drops his arms with a sigh. He looks disappointed, like Michael is being very boring.
“Michael, please,” He says, extending both hands palms-up, like a show of peace. “No one here is going to hurt you, we’re–”
“Not like that,” Michael groans, and scrubs his face with his hands. “I stink.”
David pauses, reassessing. And then slowly, he smiles.
“You what?”
“I smell, man,” Michael pushes himself up off the couch and takes a sharp step away from him. “You could have told me this was part of… all of this! I haven’t been able to shower in forever. I feel gross, I smell gross– I’m supposed to just live like this? Forever?”
“No, no,” David says, waving a hand lazily in the air. “Don’t worry. It’s an easy solution. Come on, I’ve got something that will help.”

“You love her, right?”“Are you for real?” Michael sputters. We just met.
David smiles. It’s that human sense of scale. The belief that there’s a right order to things, a point in time when it becomes acceptable to know what you want out of life. Ridiculous. David knew he loved Star the moment she pushed him from that billboard, knew he wanted Michael the second that punch connected with his nose.
