Wayne smirked before switching to a genuine smile as Dick ran over with his oversized backpack on. Most of the other students were gone by that point, and Wayne looked around before pulling a sucker out of his jacket pocket.
“Want one?” he asked, holding it out to Dick.
The kid sheepishly looked around.
“Those are for little kids.”
“I’m glad you said that, actually,” Wayne said, unwrapping the red sucker and putting it in his mouth, which made his next words poorly enunciated. “Because I was really wanting it for myself.”

Batman is missing, and Gordon ruminates over run-ins with the Bat and Bruce Wayne as he decides his next move, worried he'll track him down too late.

Hughie’s looking at him now, and Butcher meets his gaze.
“It’s okay, Butcher, if this is how I go—”
“You shut the fuck up, Hughie. Shut the fuck up.”"One shot. On a mission gone wrong, Hughie gets injured, leaving Butcher to take care of him. It doesn't help that they're in the middle of nowhere with no phone service and a car with a shot engine.
It really doesn't help when Hughie's condition goes downhill.

Summary
"I kill so others don't have to," Bruce states firmly and clearly. This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill."
Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?"
Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try."
(Jason meets a version of Bruce who has manifested his fears very differently.)

“I’ve asked Hal to go with me. Are you going to be weird about it?”
“Why would I be weird about it?” Bruce says. He crosses his arms and just barely restrains himself from scowling. “Is it because there’s no one else available? I can move around my schedule if you’d like.”
For some reason, his son’s tendency to hang out with Hal Jordan is not one of the things Jason’s grown out of. It started out from one of Jason’s more creative ideas to annoy Bruce, way back in his early middle school days, but it has developed into—and it does annoy Bruce to admit this—a mutual friendship between the two of them.
“Unbelievable.” Jason’s face splits into a grin, one that usually means trouble. “You’re already weird about it.”
(Or: Bruce Wayne is not the most well-adjusted one in all of this. Hal Jordan will be the first one to tell you: "I told you so.")

Steph, in a way, was much like Bruce. They were both children no one had asked for, begging and demanding that someone, who otherwise had nothing to do with them, take on the burden of wanting them.
Except she had been lucky; all of them were.
That in spite of everything, Steph had never wondered if wanting hands would catch her if she should fall.
So no, she will absolutely not hold back, nor will she even try to restrain the rest of the Wayne children who are equally ready to go to war for the man who took them in and called them his, regardless of the blood in their veins or what name they went by.
Because no matter the circumstances that led to a child's existence, they should never have to wonder if they will fall asleep safe and wake up loved.
Isn't that right, Alfred Pennyworth?

The kid seizes in pain, back bowing off the table, and lets out a choked sound, scrabbling at Vin’s wrist. He doesn't know what the hell the kid expected to happen, blowing a building up like that, but he wouldn't be talked out of it. Now he's got a hole in his belly and shrapnel lodged in his guts.
“Hell of a lot of blood in one body. Batman?”
“The explosion,” Vin grunts, wrapping the wound up tight. “Helped him rig the bomb myself.”
