“Whitaker?” Robby frowned at him when he realised he wasn’t following him into the room.

“Whitaker,” he says, tilting his head up toward the empty spot in front of Dennis. “Feelin’ sentimental?” He asks, amusedly.
Dennis flushes as a nervous grin plasters its way on his face. He laughs all wobbly like before uncrossing his arms to shove his hands in his pockets. “Oh, no, uh— just… thinking is all.” He says, shrugging. And humiliatingly, as if on cue, his stomach makes the loudest sound he’s ever heard it produce.
They stare at each other in silence for a long moment. Robby’s brows drawn up in surprise and Dennis’s face scrunched in embarrassment. He meekly pats his stomach and clears his throat.
“I.. forgot to bring lunch, actually.” Dennis says, laughing softly. The silence is killing him. Robby hums, biting back a very obvious smile. At least someone is finding joy in his terrible situation.. And Robby’s bad mood hasn’t seeped into their interaction. Robby just smiles, shaking his head in delight and setting his mug down. He reaches over to swing open the fridge.
“Mm, bad practice kid. You’re gonna have to eat more if you’re gonna keep those muscles.”

“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

Or, Dennis is anxiously headed home for a "wedding" in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the details of which are increasingly fuzzy. Robby's got a medical conference in Omaha that same weekend. So they carpool. Summary
There were a lot of things Robby had learnt about Dennis during his time working with him in the ED. Some things he’d learnt made sense. Food was scarce on his parent’s failing farm so he would still panic and hoard food despite his steady income. He never bothered to listen to any music that had come out in the last few decades, he much preferred the classics. He was proud that he didn’t rely on coffee to get through a shift but chugged down energy drinks like nobodies’ business. A lot of his clothes were too big and baggy on him because he was used to hand me downs that he’d ‘grow into’.
Some things he’d learnt really surprised him and Robby found them hard to process. Such as the discovery that Dennis was a real ladies’ man and seemed to have all the younger doctors of the pitt wrapped around his finger. He wasn’t surprised that women should take an interest in him, he was soft, caring and attractive. But he was surprised that someone as sweet as Dennis would be such a player.
