The library’s doors were slightly ajar, light spilling around their edges—he wasn’t the only one retreating tonight. Percy hesitated in the threshold and peered inside.. The stranger’s profile was sharp as a knife—high cheekbones, inky lashes, the quick tilt of his mouth as he muttered something to himself. He wore subdued finery, all black and silver, and moved with the languid confidence of a cat burglar surveying a mark.
Percy froze, heart thudding in his throat. He’d memorized the guest lists—he was compulsive that way—and this face wasn’t on it. Or maybe it was, and Percy had not expected anyone so striking to appear among Whitestone’s usual crop of inbred aristocrats.
The stranger glanced down, catching Percy’s gaze. His eyes were dark enough to look almost golden in the library’s warm light. “You’re not supposed to be here,” the stranger said, voice pitched just above a whisper.
Percy's mother is determined that all of her children will make a match that would keep them safe. Percy just wants to be left alone.

No, this man (just like Percy, who recently turned 19). He’s probably about Percy’s age, maybe a little older, but he runs with the Clasp. Percy only knows a few things for certain about Vax’ildan: he’s good with daggers. He’s got a twin sister. He’s fast as lightning when he wants to be, good at fading away into the shadows, too.
He’s a thief, and probably an assassin to boot.
And he’s easily the most beautiful person Percy’s ever seen.

The worst part about college, Percy decided, wasn’t the exams or the all-night labs or even the fact that the radiator in his dorm clicked like a metronome set to deranged. No, the worst part was Vax’ildan Vessar—his best friend, his roommate, his maddeningly barefoot partner in crime—sprawled across Percy’s bed with a crooked grin and absolutely no idea that Percy was in love with him. Hopelessly, humiliatingly, can’t-look-him-in-the-eyes-for-too-long in love.
Percy was in love with his best friend. It was a fact, a little like the sky was blue or Scanlan would make at least one sex joke before noon.
But Vax is a slippery bastard and when Percy finds out exactly what Vax's job is, well he genuinely thinks this will be the thing to finish him off.

“No. Maybe. I am going to be sick.”
“Please don’t be sick,” Percy begged, wincing as Vax half-collapsed against the wall and let the world tilt. “What do I do?” He’d never been in a fight except with words. He’d never seen this much blood come out of anything that wasn’t a rabbit on the dissecting table.
Vax was laughing, high and sharp, the way a broken music box laughs when you wind it too far. “You don’t want to help, run,” he spat, “I’m not going to chase you. Promise.”
When Vax's attempt at kidnapping a third son goes spectacularly wrong, Percy kidnaps himself out of guilt. It was supposed to be simple, but apparently Percy's never met a simple situation he couldn't over think.

That didn't keep him fom dropping his arrogant, authoritative, asshole imagine though. And gods... this guard was an asshole!! And he was not happy with Percy. At all.
"Do I look like I'm messing around? Do I look like I won't punish you?" Vax had asked.
Percy couldn't believe his ears, this was not how he did things! The indignity! But did he want it? Did he want Vax to bring him down to earth?
