    She had no reason whatsoever to trust him. His people killed hers so regularly it hardly merited mentioning. But she thought of the odd familiarity of the flute, and the joy of his laugh, and his arm about her as he carried her away onto dry land.

    "Then have a think about my question." Maedhros returns his hand to his shoulder. "Why am I the general of our forces? Why do I make sure we can fight?"

    Ereinion stares at the floor for a few moments. "Because…because if something were to go wrong, we would be ready," he says eventually. "So we can defend ourselves." He looks up at Maedhros. "Right?"

    Maedhros skims his knuckles over his cheeks. "Correct. I learned to fight so I could defend the people I love. Sometimes that meant taking the fight to the enemy before they brought it to us, but it was always for Atto, and your uncles, and all these people around us." He tweaks Ereinion's nose again, delighting in his son's affronted squawk. "And now you. This is your first lesson."

    Ereinion looks at him from between hands sheltering his nose from further harm. "What is?"

    Maedhros holds out the small, blunted blade, balanced across one palm and one wrist. "Always, always, know why you're picking up a weapon to fight. If you don't know, then don't do it."

    Fingon smiled. “If I confessed to how often I thought about bedding you, you would accuse me of intemperance.”

    This was true, thought Fingon disliked being facetious. He shifted foot to foot. If he thought too long about last night, and bringing Maedhros to heel by force, it brought on a queasy, intoxicating hunger.

    (Maedhros is healed in Mithrim, and Fingon discovers they share some new inclinations)

    Given that, he is unsure why it has not happened to him yet.
