And so You Fell and You're Intact

Summary:

“I want to try deeper subspace. This seemed like a logical progression from the leather scene. From... free—well, everything else.”

(In which Robby and Jack scene, but it doesn't quite go the way Robby had hoped.)

Notes:

Big thanks for @hawksredrobe on tumblr for sharing the prompt list!

Title is from "Surrendering" by Alanis Morissette.

Day 18 - master/servant

(Note: This is part 03 of a 06 part series; you do not need to read them in order, neither do you need to read all of them to understand what is going on. The fics are pretty self-sufficient. The remaining parts will be posted throughout Kinktober.)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Robby had negotiated scenes before. He’d negotiated with strangers at clubs, with casual partners who knew the mechanics but not the man, with people whose names he’d forgotten by morning. This shouldn’t feel different.

It felt different.

“So,” said Jack, sitting across from him at Robby’s kitchen table, notepad open between them like they were planning a difficult scheduling conflict instead of two days of carefully orchestrated depravity. “Master and servant. You’re sure about this?”

Robby kept his voice level.

“I suggested it.”

“You also suggested that experimental treatment protocol for sepsis last month and spent three days second-guessing yourself.”

“That was different. That was—”

Robby stopped, because Jack was right and they both knew it. He tried again.

“I want to try deeper subspace. This seemed like a logical progression from the leather scene. From... free—well, everything else.”

Everything else. Months of scenes that had started as a one-time accident and become a pattern neither of them could break. Months of sleeping together, eating together, spending their overlapping days off tangled in Robby’s sheets or sprawled on Jack’s couch. Months of waking up to Jack’s face on the pillow beside him and pretending his heart didn’t stutter at the sight. Months of pretending this was just friendship, just sex, just kink, because naming it anything else would make it real and breakable and Robby couldn’t survive losing this—losing Jack—not now, not when he’d already let Jack so far inside him that extraction would require surgery.

Jack’s expression softened in that way that made Robby’s chest tight, made him want to reach across the table and touch, claim, confess.

“Okay. Let’s go through it properly then.”

They went through it. Safewords—green for good, yellow for slow down or check in, red for full stop. Hard limits: no degradation around Robby’s competence as a doctor, no surprise pain play, nothing that would leave marks visible in scrubs. Soft limits: Robby wasn’t sure how he’d handle extended periods of being treated as nothing rather than a person, but he wanted to try. Wanted to see if he could give Jack that much of himself, if he could trust Jack to hold it without breaking him. Jack’s accessibility needs: he’d keep his prosthesis on for most of the scene but might need to remove it for comfort, and Robby needed to remember that certain positions would require adjustment.

“Master and servant means I own you within the scene,” said Jack, his voice dropping into that particular register that made Robby’s spine straighten involuntarily, made heat pool low in his belly. “You’ll address me as Master. You’ll obey my commands. You exist to serve me. Your body, your pleasure, your choices—all mine for the duration of the scene.”

“Yes,” agreed Robby.

His mouth was dry, his pulse loud in his ears.

“And if anything feels wrong—not just physically wrong, but emotionally wrong—you use your safeword. Immediately. No pushing through it to prove something.”

“I know how safewords work, Jack.”

“I know you do. I also know you have a martyr complex the size of Pittsburgh,” said Jack, teasing but serious at the same time. He reached across the table, fingers brushing Robby’s wrist. Not quite holding, not quite letting go. The touch burned. “I need you to promise me. Red means red. No exceptions.”

Robby looked at Jack’s hand on his wrist, at the careful way Jack touched him even now—like Robby was something precious, something worth protecting—and felt something dangerous unfold in his chest. Love, probably. Terror, definitely. The desperate, clawing need to keep this, to keep Jack, even if it meant never naming what they were to each other.

“I promise.”

“Good,” said Jack. He pulled back, and Robby felt the loss like a physical ache. “Aftercare tomorrow. Full day. Nothing scheduled, nowhere to be. We’ll order food, stay in, talk through everything.”

“You’re very thorough.”

“One of us has to be,” said Jack. His smile was crooked, fond, and Robby wanted to kiss him so badly his teeth ached with it. “You ready?”

No. Yes. Robby didn’t know anymore. He only knew he wanted this—wanted Jack—with a ferocity that terrified him.

“Green.”

*****

The scene started slowly, which was Jack’s way. No dramatic transformation, no sudden shift into role. Just Jack standing from the table, looking down at Robby with an expression that was almost but not quite the one he wore in the ER when he was running a trauma. Focused. Intense. Hungry.

“Strip,” said Jack. “Then kneel by the couch.”

Robby stood, fingers steady as he unbuttoned his shirt despite the way his heart hammered against his ribs. This part was familiar—the vulnerability of undressing under Jack’s gaze, the way his body responded before his mind fully caught up. But it felt different now, weighted with intention. He folded his clothes out of habit, set them on the chair, and walked naked to the living room. His cock was already half-hard, anticipation thrumming through him like electricity.

Kneeling was an act of deliberate surrender. Robby settled onto the cushion he’d placed there earlier, positioned himself with his back straight and hands loose on his thighs, and waited. His skin felt too tight, every nerve ending alive and aware. He could feel Jack’s gaze on him even before Jack entered the room, could feel the weight of being seen, being wanted, being owned.

Jack took his time. Robby heard him moving through the apartment—the bathroom, the bedroom, back to the kitchen. Heard the coffee maker start, the familiar domestic sounds that shouldn’t be erotic but somehow were when Robby was naked and waiting and aching and Jack was making him wait on purpose. Making him feel it. Making him need.

When Jack finally came into the living room, he had his coffee in one hand and his tablet in the other. He settled onto the couch above Robby, close enough that Robby could feel the warmth of his leg, smell the soap from his shower, sense the solid presence of him. Jack started reading, and Robby waited.

Minutes passed. Five, then ten. Jack sipped his coffee, scrolled through whatever he was reading, and ignored Robby completely. It should have been boring. Instead, Robby felt his awareness narrowing, focusing down to the sound of Jack’s breathing, the small shifts of his weight, the knowledge that he was here because Jack owned him—within the scene, within the boundaries they’d set, but owned nonetheless. His cock thickened further, and he didn’t touch it. Didn’t move. Just knelt and waited and let the wanting build until it was all he could feel.

“Come here, servant,” Jack said eventually, not looking up from his tablet.

The word sent a shiver through Robby’s body, made his cock twitch. Servant. Not sub, not bottom. Servant. Owned. His.

Robby rose smoothly, moved to stand in front of Jack. Jack set the tablet aside and looked at him—really looked, the kind of thorough assessment that made Robby feel stripped beyond mere nakedness. Like Jack was evaluating what he owned, what he could do with it. What he wanted to do with it.

“You’re thinking too much,” Jack observed.

“Occupational hazard, Master.”

Robby’s voice was steadier than he had expected with the title. It brought a quirk to the corner of Jack’s lips. Not quite a smile yet undeniably pleased.

“Mm,” said Jack. His hand came up, fingers tracing the line of Robby’s hip, and Robby’s breath caught. The touch was light, almost casual, but it burned. “A servant doesn’t think. A servant obeys. Understood?”

The words should have been ridiculous. They’d negotiated this, planned it, agreed to the dynamic. But hearing Jack say them, feeling the weight of Jack’s gaze on him and Jack’s hand on his skin, made them real in a way that stole Robby’s breath and made his knees weak.

“Yes, Master.”

The title still felt strange on his tongue, formal and distant and exactly right. It created space between them—the space Robby needed to do this, to give this much of himself without shattering.

“Good. Move closer. I’m going to use your mouth.”

Robby shuffled forward until he was on his knees between Jack’s legs, and the position felt like coming home. Jack opened his jeans with unhurried efficiency. Robby waited for permission, for the command that would tell him what his Master wanted. His mouth watered. His cock ached. He wanted to taste Jack, wanted to serve him, wanted to be good for him.

“Suck me,” said Jack. “Keep me hard. Don’t make me come. A servant exists for his Master’s pleasure, not his own gratification.”

Robby took Jack’s cock into his mouth and moaned at the taste of him, the weight of him on his tongue. This was familiar territory—the stretch of his jaw, the particular way Jack liked to be sucked, the sounds Jack made when Robby did it right. But the scene transformed it. Jack’s hand in his hair wasn’t guiding, just resting. Possessive. The hand of a master on his servant, and Robby wanted to be owned like this, wanted to be Jack’s in every way that mattered.

He found the rhythm that would keep Jack aroused without pushing him toward orgasm, hollowing his cheeks and working his tongue along the underside of Jack’s shaft. Jack’s cock was thick and hard in his mouth, leaking precome that Robby licked away eagerly. He could feel Jack’s thigh muscles tensing under his hands, could hear the slight hitch in Jack’s breathing that meant he was affected, that Robby was doing this right.

Jack picked up his tablet again and kept reading. Robby serviced him, kept him warm and hard, and let his mind drift into the strange peace of being owned, being used, being nothing but a body for his Master’s pleasure. His own cock hung heavy and untouched between his legs, dripping onto the floor, and that was perfect too. This wasn’t about his pleasure. This was about Jack.

Time became elastic. Could have been ten minutes, could have been thirty. Robby’s jaw ached pleasantly and his knees protested the hard floor beneath the pillow and his cock throbbed with neglect and none of it mattered because Jack’s hand was steady in his hair and this was exactly what he’d asked for. What he needed.

“Good servant,” Jack murmured finally, tugging gently. “That’s good. You’re so good for me. Up on the couch. Hands and knees.”

The praise made Robby’s chest tight, made him want to curl around the words and keep them safe. He pulled off slowly, licked his lips, tasted Jack on his tongue. Climbed onto the couch and positioned himself, presenting himself for Jack’s use. His cock hung heavy between his legs. He could feel how wet he was, how ready.

Jack positioned him carefully—adjusting the angle of Robby’s hips, spreading his thighs wider—and Robby heard the sound of a condom wrapper, the slick of lube. Jack’s fingers pressed into him, opening him up, and Robby pushed back into the touch with a desperate sound he couldn’t suppress.

“Color?” asked Jack, hand warm on Robby’s lower back.

“Green, Master.”

So green. So fucking green.

Jack pushed into him in one slow, steady thrust that made Robby’s breath catch and his vision white out at the edges. No preamble, no extensive prep—they’d done this enough that Robby’s body opened for him easily, welcomed the stretch and burn and fullness. Welcomed Jack inside him, where he belonged.

“Stay still,” commanded Jack. “A servant takes what his Master gives him.”

Jack proceeded to fuck him with the same unhurried thoroughness he’d brought to everything else. Deep, measured strokes that lit up every nerve ending without rushing toward climax. Using him. Taking what he owned. Robby braced himself against the couch arm and let it happen, let himself be the vessel for Jack’s pleasure, the body Jack owned, the servant providing service. His own cock swung heavy and untouched between his legs with every thrust, and that was perfect too—this wasn’t about his pleasure, wasn’t about reciprocity. This was about being owned, being Jack’s, being exactly what Jack needed.

He felt himself slipping deeper into subspace, that particular headspace where everything simplified into sensation and obedience and the profound relief of not having to make decisions. Jack’s hands on his hips, bruising and possessive. Jack’s cock inside him, thick and hard and perfect. Jack’s voice saying, “So good for me, such a perfect servant, taking me so well,” and Robby believed it because in this moment, in this role, he was. He was good. He was perfect.

He was Jack’s.

Jack’s rhythm shifted, became more demanding. Robby felt the change in his entire body. Felt Jack chasing his own pleasure now, using Robby’s body to get there, and it was exactly what Robby wanted. To be used. To be needed. To be the one Jack chose.

Jack pulled out eventually. Robby made a small sound of loss that he couldn’t quite suppress. Empty. Aching. Wanting.

“Shh,” soothed Jack, hand gentle on Robby’s spine. “Not done with you yet. Just changing position.”

He arranged Robby on his back, legs spread, and fucked into him again. This angle let Robby see Jack’s face—the concentration there, the hunger, the careful control. Let him see the way Jack looked at him like he was something precious even while using him like he was something owned. The contradiction should have been jarring. Instead, it pulled Robby deeper, made him feel safe and wanted and terrifyingly vulnerable all at once.

They moved together, Jack’s thrusts steady and relentless. Robby felt himself getting close despite not touching his own cock. The angle, the fullness, the way Jack was looking at him—it was almost enough. Almost too much.

“Master,” Robby gasped, his voice wrecked. “Master, please—”

“Not yet,” Jack said, slowing his rhythm, and Robby whined at the loss. “You don’t come without permission. Your pleasure belongs to your Master.”

Robby whined, hips trying to chase the friction Jack was denying him, but Jack held him still with firm hands on his hips.

“Do you understand, servant? Your body is mine. Your pleasure is mine. You come when I allow it, not before.”

“Yes, Master,” managed Robby, trembling with need, his cock leaking steadily onto his stomach.

Jack pulled out, leaving Robby empty and aching and desperate.

“We’re not done. But first, you’re going to feed your Master.”

*****

They broke for lunch. Jack made sandwiches while Robby cleaned up, and they ate at the kitchen table. Robby remained naked, and Jack kept touching him—casual, possessive touches that reminded Robby he was owned, he was property, he was his Master’s servant. A hand on his thigh. Fingers brushing his shoulder. Each touch a brand, a claim, a promise.

“Color?” asked Jack, handing him a water bottle.

“Green, Maste,” said Robby. His voice was rough, well-used already. “Very green.”

“Good,” said Jack. His smile was warm, genuine, and Robby wanted to live in that smile. “You’re doing beautifully.”

The praise settled into Robby’s chest like a physical thing, warm and weighty. He wanted to curl around it, protect it, keep it safe. Wanted to ask Jack if he meant it, if Robby was really beautiful like this, if Jack wanted to keep him. Not just for the scene, not just for the sex, but for everything. For always.

He didn’t ask. Asking would break the scene, break the careful fiction that this was just kink, just exploration, just two friends helping each other out. Asking would make it real, and real things could be lost.

After lunch, Jack led him to the bedroom.

“On the bed. On your back.”

Robby complied, his body humming with anticipation and need. Jack produced soft rope from the bag they’d prepared earlier.

“Going to tie your wrists to the headboard. You’ll stay here until I decide otherwise. A servant waits for his Master’s attention. Color?”

“Green, Master.”

Jack tied him carefully, checking the tension, making sure Robby could flex his fingers. His touch was gentle, competent, and Robby felt safe even as he felt vulnerable. Then Jack stepped back and looked at Robby spread out on the bed, bound and exposed and waiting. The hunger in his expression made Robby’s breath catch.

“Perfect,” said Jack, softly. “My perfect servant.”

He left.

Robby lay there, listening to Jack move through the apartment. Heard the shower start, heard Jack humming something off-key. Heard the shower stop and Jack’s uneven gait—he must have removed his prosthesis—and the sound of crutches on hardwood. The domestic sounds should have broken the spell, but they didn’t. They made it more real, more intimate. This was Jack. His Jack. Taking care of himself while Robby waited, bound and ready and his.

Time stretched. Robby tested the ropes idly, not trying to escape but feeling the constraint, the proof that he couldn’t leave even if he wanted to. His cock stirred with interest, and he let his mind drift again into that peaceful space where nothing existed except waiting and serving and being owned. Being Jack’s.

Jack came back eventually, prosthesis back on, fully dressed. He sat on the edge of the bed and ran his hand down Robby’s chest, over his stomach, wrapped his fingers around Robby’s half-hard cock. Robby gasped at the touch, his hips jerking involuntarily.

“Going to keep you like this for a while,” Jack said conversationally, stroking slowly. “Keep you right on the edge. A servant doesn’t come without his Master’s permission. Understood?”

“Yes, Master.”

Jack proceeded to do exactly that—touching Robby with maddening skill, bringing him to the edge of orgasm and backing off, over and over until Robby was shaking with need and his wrists were pulling against the ropes, and he couldn’t think past the desperate want for release. Jack’s hand on his cock was torture, was perfect, was everything. Jack’s thumb rubbed over the head, spreading precome. Robby sobbed with the need to come.

“Please,” begged Robby, but he barely registered the word. It felt more like he heard the word rather than said it himself, his voice broken and desperate. “Please, Master, please—”

“Not yet,” said Jack, almost gentle, his hand slowing to a maddening crawl. “You come when I decide you come. You’re my servant, remember? Your body belongs to me. Your pleasure belongs to me. You belong to me.”

And that should have been perfect. That was exactly what Robby had asked for, exactly the dynamic he’d wanted to explore. But something in the words landed wrong, hit some nerve he hadn’t known was exposed, cut through the careful distance of the scene and made it real in a way that terrified him.

You belong to me.

Except.

He didn’t.

He wasn’t really Jack’s.

This was all make-believe.

Robby’s breath caught, and not in a good way. Suddenly, the ropes felt too tight, the room too small, Jack’s hand on him too much and not enough and completely wrong. Suddenly, he wasn’t floating in subspace—he was trapped, pinned, erased into nothing but property for Jack’s use, and Jack was dressed and whole and separate while Robby was naked and bound and falling apart.

You belong to me.

But he didn’t. He couldn’t. Because belonging meant giving everything, meant trusting Jack with all the parts of himself he’d kept carefully locked away—the neediness, the fear, the desperate love he couldn’t name—and Robby had already given him so much without naming it. If he gave this too—if he let himself truly belong to Jack—then there would be nothing left of himself, nothing separate, nothing safe. And when Jack inevitably realized Robby was too much, too broken, too fucking needy, when Jack left like everyone always left, there would be nothing left to protect. Nothing left of Robby at all.

The panic clawed up his throat, sharp and choking. He couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t—

“Color?” asked Jack, and his voice sounded distant, concerned.

Robby tried to say green. Tried to push through it, because this was what he’d wanted, what he’d asked for, and he wasn’t going to ruin it by being weak or needy or too fucking much—

You belong to me.

“Robby,” said Jack, voice firm and thick with concern. He let go of Robby’s cock, and the loss of touch made everything worse. “I need a color.”

“Red.”

The word came out broken, desperate, a sob more than a word.

“Red, red, fuck, I’m sorry, red—”

Jack moved instantly. The ropes came off Robby’s wrists in seconds—Jack must have used a quick-release knot—and then Jack was pulling back, hands up, giving Robby space even though Robby didn’t know if he wanted space or wanted to be held so tightly he couldn’t fall apart.

“Okay,” said Jack, voice steady despite the fear Robby could see in his eyes. “Okay, we’re done. Scene’s over. You’re safe. Can I touch you, or do you need space?”

Robby couldn’t answer. He curled onto his side, arms wrapped around himself. He tried to remember how to breathe. His chest felt too tight. His throat closed. He couldn’t stop shaking. Couldn’t stop the tears that were suddenly streaming down his face, hot and humiliating.

“Robby,” said Jack. His voice was closer now, careful, gentle. “I’m going to sit next to you. I’m not going to touch you unless you say it’s okay. You’re safe. The scene is over. You did everything right.”

Robby made a sound that might have been a laugh or a sob. Everything right. Sure. Except he’d ruined it, broken down like a fucking amateur, couldn’t even handle a scene he’d specifically requested—

“Stop,” said Jack, firmly. “I can hear you thinking from here. You didn’t do anything wrong. You used your safeword exactly when you needed to. That’s perfect. That’s exactly right.”

“I’m sorry,” managed Robby, his voice wrecked and raw. “I’m sorry, I thought I could—I wanted—”

“I know. It’s okay. You don’t have to explain right now,” said Jack. He shifted, and Robby heard the distinctive sound of him adjusting his prosthesis. “I’m going to get you some water and a blanket. Then we’re going to sit here as long as you need. Okay?”

Robby nodded, not trusting his voice, not trusting anything.

Jack moved away briefly then returned with a glass of water and Robby’s softest blanket. He draped the blanket over Robby’s shoulders with infinite care, set the water on the nightstand within reach. His hands were steady, gentle, and Robby wanted to lean into that steadiness, wanted to let Jack hold him together.

“Can I sit on the bed?” Jack asked. “Not touching, just close?”

“Yeah,” said Robby. He pulled the blanket tighter around himself, trying to stop the shaking. “Yeah, okay.”

Jack sat, careful to leave space between them. Robby could feel the warmth of him anyway, the solid presence that was somehow both the problem and the solution. The person he wanted to belong to and the person he was terrified of losing.

They sat in silence for a long time. Robby’s breathing gradually steadied, the shaking eased. He felt hollowed out, scraped raw, and underneath that was a shame so profound it made his teeth ache. He’d ruined this. Ruined them. Jack would never want to scene with him again, would never trust him again, would realize Robby was too broken to be worth the effort—

“Can I touch you now?” asked Jack, softly. “Just your hand. You don’t have to say yes.”

Robby looked at Jack’s hand, extended palm-up on the bed between them. An offering. A question. He reached out slowly, placed his hand in Jack’s, and felt Jack’s fingers close around his—warm, steady, safe.

“There you are,” said Jack, and his voice was so gentle it made Robby’s chest ache. “You’re doing so well. Just breathe with me, okay? In and out. That’s it.”

They breathed together, Jack’s thumb rubbing slow circles on the back of Robby’s hand. Grounding. Anchoring. Robby focused on the sensation—the warmth of Jack’s skin, the calluses on his palm, the steady rhythm of his breathing. Slowly, the panic receded, leaving exhaustion in its wake.

“Better?” asked Jack, after a while.

“Yeah,” said Robby. His voice was rough, but steadier. “Yeah, I think so.”

“Good. Can you drink some water for me?”

Robby nodded, and Jack handed him the glass. He drank slowly, the cool water soothing his raw throat. Jack watched him carefully. Robby could see the fear still lingering in his expression—fear that he’d hurt Robby, that he’d pushed too far, that he’d broken something between them.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” said Robby, because he needed Jack to know that. Needed Jack to understand. Jack wasn’t the broken one. “It wasn’t you. It was—”

He stopped, because explaining would mean admitting things he wasn’t ready to admit. Things that terrified him.

“It was me. Something in my head.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Did he? Robby considered, then shook his head.

“Not yet. Maybe tomorrow. During aftercare.”

“Okay,” said Jack. His hand tightened on Robby’s, just slightly. “What do you need right now?”

What did he need? Robby took inventory: his wrists were fine, no damage from the ropes. His body was sore in the normal ways, nothing concerning. His mind was a mess, but that would take time to sort through.

What he needed was Jack. Close but not demanding. Present but not pressing. Real, not the scene version, not the Master, just Jack.

“Can you...”

Robby swallowed.

“Can you hold me? Just for a minute?”

“Of course.”

Jack moved carefully, giving Robby time to change his mind, then he was pulling Robby into his arms. Robby went willingly, pressing his face into Jack’s shoulder and breathing in the familiar scent of him. Jack’s arms were solid around him, one hand rubbing slow circles on his back. Robby felt something in his chest unclench.

“I’ve got you,” murmured Jack into his hair. “I’ve got you. You’re safe. I’m not going anywhere.”

Robby closed his eyes and let himself believe it. Let himself be held, be comforted, be cared for. Let himself need Jack in a way that had nothing to do with the scene and everything to do with the truth he couldn’t say: that he was in love with Jack, that he wanted to belong to Jack in every way that mattered, that the thought of losing this—losing Jack—was more terrifying than anything else in the world.

They stayed like that for a long time, Jack holding him and Robby letting himself be held. Eventually, the exhaustion caught up with him, and he felt himself starting to drift.

“Sleep if you need to,” said Jack, softly. “I’ll be right here.”

“Don’t leave,” mumbled Robby, already half-asleep.

“I won’t. I promise.”

Robby believed him. He let himself sink into sleep, safe in Jack’s arms, and for now—for this moment—it was enough.

*****

Later—much later, after Robby had woken and showered and dressed in soft clothes and they’d migrated to the couch with tea and the kind of mindless television that required no emotional investment—Jack spoke again.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have checked in more. Should have seen—”

“Don’t,” said Robby, cutting him off. “You did everything right. You were attentive, you asked for colors, you stopped the second I said red. This wasn’t on you.”

“Then what was it on?”

Robby stared at the television, not really seeing it.

“I think I wanted something I’m not ready for. Or I’m ready for it but not in the way I thought I was. I don’t know. I need to think about it.”

Jack was quiet for a moment.

“We don’t have to do this again. Any of it. If it’s too much—”

“No,” said Robby. The word came out sharper than he intended. He softened his voice. “No, I don’t want to stop. I just need to figure out what went wrong so we can do it better next time.”

“Next time,” repeated Jack, something uncertain in his voice.

“Yeah. Next time,” said Robby, and he finally looked at Jack. “Unless you don’t want—”

“I want,” said Jack. His expression was raw, unguarded, and Robby could see everything in it—the desire, the fear, the care. “I want whatever you’re willing to give me. However you’re willing to give it. I just don’t want to hurt you.”

“You didn’t hurt me. I hurt myself by not knowing my own limits,” said Robby. He managed a weak smile. “Occupational hazard. I’m used to knowing exactly what I can handle. Turns out I’m not as self-aware as I thought.”

“You’re human,” said Jack. “You’re allowed to be human.”

The words settled into Robby’s chest next to the earlier praise, warm and weighty and dangerous. He wanted to lean into them, wanted to let himself be human with Jack in all the ways he’d been too afraid to try. Wanted to name what this was, what they were, what he felt every time Jack looked at him like he was something worth keeping.

He wasn’t ready. Not yet. But maybe—maybe tomorrow, during aftercare, when they talked through everything. Maybe then he could find the words. Maybe then he could be brave enough to say: I want to belong to you. Not just in scenes. Not just in bed. In every way that matters.

Maybe.

“Stay tonight?” asked Robby, instead. “I know we planned for you to sleep in the guest room, but—”

“I’m staying,” said Jack, immediately. “I wasn’t going to leave you alone after that.”

“Okay,” said Robby. He let himself lean into Jack’s side, let himself take the comfort Jack was offering. “Okay. Good.”

Jack’s arm came around him, pulling him closer. Robby went willingly. They sat together in the blue glow of the television, not quite separate anymore, and Robby let himself exist in the space between what he could say and what he felt. Tomorrow, they would talk. Tomorrow, they would process and plan and maybe, possibly, carefully start to name the thing they’d been building in the dark.

Tonight, it was enough that Jack had heard red and stopped. That Jack had stayed. That when Robby had broken, Jack had been there to help him pick up the pieces. That Jack was still here, still holding him, still wanting him despite everything.

It was enough.

For now.
