The station commander’s pasty forehead is beading sweat, with dark patches under his arms staining his grey uniform, and his eyes are bulging like he’s been in partial vacuum. Edwin’s first impression, as he blinks away the airlock alert flare, is that he looks like something out of the black and white horror movies his mom used to call up from the university archives to watch with him as a kid. The fact that the first thing Cupp says is, “I hear you have a conservatory with non-artificial avian pollinators,” doesn’t help with the bulging thing.

Oh my god, I didn't know there were any copies of this left on the internet. For those who don't know, this is like. This is a foundational text of hockey RPF. This is from before hockey RPF was really a thing even. It's from the mid-aughts and wasn't posted to a fanfiction website. Instead, OP dropped this insane RPF manifesto onto a normal ass hockey fan forum (which no longer exists) then deleted their account like two days later. Just handed this to a bunch of jocks and hockey bros and dipped. Legendary shit. Like, I don't think this kid even knew what fanfiction was, the fucking hand of god just compelled him to write about being an MLH player's sex slave and show it to the world. I pray every day that this insane child actually made it to the MLH and got to meet Scott Hunter.
So maybe Shane had a little crush on Scott Hunter in his younger years. So maybe he anonymously posted online about it once. So maybe it had become an internet legend and a running joke in the MLH.

Grace had joked, occasionally, that they were a liquid and I was a solid, two completely different states of matter; it was a joke because it was an exaggeration, an overstatement. In reality, Grace had bones and teeth, and I had blood and steam, but we both enjoyed the pretense that we were more different than we were. It reminded us that our new friendship was something rare, something strange and special. Grace called themself a blob and called me a hunk of granite (a great insult that I was saving to use again on Erid), or they called themself a water balloon and called me a little mountain, or themself a puddle and me a pile of rocks: and they tilted at me, the human mouth tilt they called a smile, and that tilt always made me think again, lovingly, about the enormous odds against us ever having met.
Stone and water, water and stone. That comparison, even as a joke, never failed to ring a bell deep inside of me. Because I would think about erosion, about the long slow beat of water against rock, and I would think about how the rock was always, in the end, consumed.
