Summary
Shadow isn't entirely sure how Big feels about his work for GUN, but when he gets injured on a mission and Big comes to GUN's headquarters to see him, the two of them are forced to confront their assumptions about each other.

Big had never said anything about it, but Shadow had always suspected that the cat disapproved of his work for GUN. Big was carefree and kind. He lived a quiet life and didn’t hurt anyone, whereas Shadow would do anything to achieve his goals. Even though Big would always hug Shadow and wish him luck before each of his missions, he was never able to hide the troubled look on his face when he said goodbye.

Shadow made a vague noise at the back of his throat. Saying ‘a bad dream’ was softer than saying ‘a nightmare’. It leached the severity from his episodes, making them seem more bearable in hindsight. It was kind. Big had always been kind, even after Shadow pricked him with his quills in his sleep or flailed with his claws out.

Omega held out one hand, articulating his fingers and joints. Then he grasped Shadow’s waist, cradling his torso with one hand, and his circuitry lit up with data inputs. Soft fur mixed with flexible quills. A back that arched lightly in response to his touch. Ribs and hipbones… and a heartbeat that pulsed beneath it all.
He had only ever seen Shadow’s heartbeat as a waveform. He had never truly felt it, and he had never wanted to kill his creator as much as he did in that moment.

Shadow closed his eyes, feeling his heart beat in his chest. His pulse throbbed, and he could sense the current of Chaos Energy that flowed through him. It was a constant, albeit a temperamental one. He laid his head down on his desk, and his breathing slowed and deepened. He felt his left arm with his free hand, identifying bones and tendons. Schematics of various guns he had worked on over the years came and went in his mind’s eye. His arm began to pulse, and he slipped into a trance. The last thing he felt before he blacked out was a stirring beneath the skin of his forearm.

There was one card he hadn’t yet played, and his foot did a reflexive tap in anticipation of a reaction he couldn’t estimate.
“Do you really think this is what Maria would have wanted you to be doing with your life?”

Summary
From behind her back, arms reached around her. Pulled her close to a being she could not observe, for her body no longer obeyed her commands. Its body was warm and soft and it held her so close, so very close, as if it was afraid of letting her go.
Something was burning inside of her. Tearing at her chest. Coursing through her arms.
The being did not speak and it did not need to. It only had to hold on as the world was consumed by the darkness, whisking the two of them into nothingness, into a void filled with millions of blue stars born from scorpions.
It accepted her anger as they fell away from the stars and the sun and the light that was gone in an instant.
